30 minutes is nothing, I do an ambitious card routine that can last five minutes. Just choose your five favoriate effects that have best audience reaction and play on it. As for price I would almost be tempted to do thirty minutes just for fun, which if I was invited somewhere I'd do anyway. But do take the money without question if they are paying.

Mark - your experience with people gathering is typical. I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned more in the advice you were given. My belief is that you need to have good extra material on you for when this (or something else unexpected) happens.
Here in Ohio there are guys charging everything from 75/hour up to 200/hour. I would estimate an average around 100/hour (for two or more hours of work). |

Thirty minutes is just enough time to warm up. I suggest you do quick tricks, or big tricks so everyone will get a small taste of your magic, and never do walk around without milking the audience for as much applause as possible. You mean you booked the job, but didn't firm up your fee at the same time?
Al PS Eric doesn't the money in Ottowa have Moose on it? PSS Frank is right if you are doing walk around and everyone in the room is watching you are doing a stand up SHOW, so charge accordingly.

1/2 an hour? That just doesn't seem right. Whenever I do a 1/2 hour, it is usually in the form of a show. Everyone is watching at once.
How many people are going to be there? Are you expected to get to everyone? Are you the main attraction or are other things going on so it is not important for you to get to everyone? All these things play into how many tricks you bring and how you approach the gig. If you do not have all this info I mentioned above, then the best advice has already been given; be prepared! I bring this up because if there is 60 people at the event and you are the main attraction, 1/2 an hour would not be enough time. I wont do the math here but you would have to recommend more time to the client. I only say this because it is you second gig. You may be lackiing experiance on how to book these events. Don't worry, we are here to help. Just keep asking questions. There is enough guys here with experiance to help you. And I agree with Paleomagic. Watch out for the bad advice! Miguel Rangel

To answer your question, strolling gigs last relative to the amount of people there vs. how important it is they see you.
Ask how many people will be at the event and how they will be seated, (assuming they will be.) Now do the math. If there are 100 people seated 10 at each table. You will have 10 tables to get to. Assuming you perform for each table an average of 6-8 minutes, you will need at least 1 1/2 hours. I would recommend two to give myself flexability and breathing room so things aren't so rushed. I looks better plus you could always go back to a table or to the person who hired you an do something extra special. Now all these variables can change. You may spend 10 minutes at a table because of the energy. You may get interuped by an announcement so you may have to sit back for 5 minutes and not perform during the speech. These things effect your timing. All these things YOU have to consider and ask the client when booking the event. The client will appreciate that you are on top of it. With the million things event planners have to think about, they appreciate your questions that they did not have to think about. I would also recommend calling the client a couple days befor the event to let them know you are still alive. This is especially important if the event was booked months in advance. Also you could ask about any changes so you could be better prepared. And don't even get me started on contracts!!! Miguel Rangel
