Having seen Fred Kaps’ rendition of the Homing Card trick gave me the impetus to learn this effect, and after playing around with it for some time I came up with the following themed presentation and patter that I think are original and that I’m submitting here for your review. I would really appreciate everyone’s comments on it.
I use the four aces of a regular deck and the Guarantee card that can be found in Bicycle decks. I felt that using the Guarantee card as the Homing Card was original. As in all Homing Card tricks, although the card is discarded repeatedly from the packet, it keeps coming back. I suppose any Homing Card trick handling can be used. I use the one described in Richard Kauffman’s The Secrets of Brother John Hamman, which I’ve shortened by using only five cards, not six as in the original. [In the description that follows, basic handling indications are between braces. The detailed handling can be found in this excellent book, which among other gems also contains Bro. John Hamman’s tips on the double lift, which helped me perform this helpful maneuver in a much more relaxed manner.] Here’s how it goes : “A well kept secret in magic is that no trick is foolproof. Most tricks can fail badly, and even professional magicians occasionally bungle. But because they lack the experience, it is beginners who are most at risk when performing, and that’s why they generally prefer to purchase their magic with a warranty. One day I got interested in a card trick performed with four aces, that the merchant sold with a warranty card. Not being a beginner any more, I felt I could do without the warranty card [first discard] and told him that I only needed one ace, two ace, three ace, but he said “I’m sorry son, the Really Fabulous Ace trick is guaranteed and we only sell it with the warranty card” [The warranty card comes back] “But sir, I’ve been in magic for a while now, and actually I think I can manage to do the Really Fabulous Ace trick with just the one ace, two ace, three aces… you’re welcome to keep the warranty card for a beginner.” [second discard] “Son, this is the Really Fabulous Ace trick and it’s really fabulous, he said, but it’s guaranteed and we only sell it with the warranty card” [warranty card again comes back] “But sir, how about if I only wanted to buy some Aces from you, any Aces taken out from a any regular deck of cards, just one ace, two ace, let’s just forget about the warranty card” [third discard] “Well son these aren’t just any Aces, they’re really fabulous and they’re guaranteed and we only sell them with the warranty card” [warranty card comes back yet again] By then was getting a bit frustrated and I told him “Come to think of it I appreciate the warranty, and I might be interested in purchasing only the warranty cards, one, two, three, four warranty cards, would that be possible ?”. Well, you know what ? He agreed to sell me only the warranty cards ! To this day I still don’t understand how I convinced him. [three aces and the warranty card are displayed as four warranty cards] One thing I do understand now is why it’s called the Really Fabulous Ace trick, because when I got home I realized that he’d kept the warranty card and managed to sell me his Aces ! [warranty card switched for the sole ace, and the four aces are displayed] Magically yours Daniel |

Why would you become interested in buying only the warranty cards?

Daniel,
Great presentation ideas here...Your presentatiion idea might also work real well with the Dan Garrett/Mike Close "Four Card Reiteration" routine. Something to think about. A.J. |

It's a nice presentation, but I'd change one thing. In several places in the script, you do this:
"..., I felt I could do without the warranty card [first discard] and told him that I only needed one ace, two ace, three ace, but he said “I’m sorry son, the Really Fabulous Ace trick is guaranteed and we only sell it with the warranty card” [The warranty card comes back]" I don't think that it's necessary to count the aces in your script when your hands are cleanly displaying the aces. It might be more natural to say this: "..., I felt I could do without the warranty card [first discard] and told him that I only needed the aces (pause until they've been displayed), but he said “I’m sorry son, the Really Fabulous Ace trick is guaranteed and we only sell it with the warranty card” [The warranty card comes back]"

Thanks to all for your comments.
Rhabarber - that's a good question you raise. I initially developped the script to adapt to the BJH handling. Maybe I should find a more 'logical' ending patterwise and alter the end of the handling. On the other hand, within the context of the routine I find that the appearance of the 4 warranty cards (thanks to the Fl***tion count) is so surprising that I am not questionned by the spectators. Barry - thanks for your comment, which does make the script lighter. Overall, although the presentation 'works', I am still trying to improve it so your comments are most helpful. One thing I'm wondering about is : Is it 'magical' enough and how can I make it more so. Best regards Daniel |

OK, consider this change. At the end of the presentation, your script says:
"By then was getting a bit frustrated and I told him “Come to think of it I appreciate the warranty, and I might be interested in purchasing only the warranty cards, one, two, three, four warranty cards, would that be possible ?”. Well, you know what ? He agreed to sell me only the warranty cards ! To this day I still don’t understand how I convinced him. [three aces and the warranty card are displayed as four warranty cards] " Instead, it could read: "Then, I had a great idea. I told him “Come to think of it, I might be interested in purchasing warranty cards (displays four warranty cards) for my other tricks; would that be possible ?”. Well, you know what ? He agreed to sell me four warranty cards! To this day I still don’t understand how I convinced him. [three aces and the warranty card are displayed as four warranty cards] " Perhaps that makes more sense. (Or, perhaps not.)

Barry- Thanks for that suggestion ! It does make a lot of sense.
A.J. - thanks for your positive comments - Where could I find the source of the '4 Card Reiteration' effect ? Best Daniel |
