The idea of writing in chalk on black cartridge paper originally came from a routine I perform based on the Koran Medallion effect. I openly write in chalk and hand the paper out. The prediction when produced from a sealed envelope is in felt pen. The contrast works well. This might end up in some lecture notes, but PM me if you are interested in the basics.

Jack...
I have to agree... Just give a female with long finger nails a run across the board, and see how many people have shivers run straight up their spine, and the hair on their amrs stand up... 8-) That and they seem to be easier to read from a distance. If I had a small group right in front of me at a table setting, I would go with the pad. Cheers. Dom

One of the great things about using a chalkboard are the sounds.
The frenzy of writing, the SNAP of a stick breaking, the dust flying. They push many psychological buttons and work on many levels. I'm surprised so few mentalists use them. |

I like the chalkboard because this material is more pleasant and noble to look at that a white plate. In a show of mentalism I prefer a smoking in the place of a tee-shirt!

Four reasons for chalkboards:
Traditional object. Used to be, they were familiar to all and used by all. They didn't really have a choice back then. What else was there to gaff up? Only paper tablets. The prop's physical characteristics rather dictated the effects and methods invented, that arose from them. Black on black is easier to gaff and get away with than white on white, etc. The frame and board made for easy and reliable flaps, hinges etc. As for today, a mentalist will use what is required by the methodology. Method dictates prop. Prop confines method.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.
