The movie industry folks ought to read that post, Paul! The most frightening thing is our own imagination. Our personal demons scare us more than anything else! I'm sure it was an exquisite fright!

Just did Halloween Horror Nights Preview last night at Universal Orlando. Many, many effects, but total darkness is pretty bad, just by itself. I'll tip some of the cool stuff after it opens, towards the end of the run.

In terms of scarey; let me first just say that what I'm about to write is the absolute truth. I'm not going to ham it up and try to tell it as a 'ghost' story, this is exactly as it was.
We live in a basement apartment, with french windows leading out into the garden. The chair I always sit in faces the windows and is 10 feet from them. One night about 8.30 I was sitting up from the seat and had moved onto its front edge, just pausing for a second. As I did, a black shape about 6 feet high and floating about 4 inches off the ground came in through the closed windows. It was as flat as a piece of paper, jet black, and looked in some respects like a pool of oil. All around it's edges, fingers of this blackness advanced and retracted in constant movement. It came in a straight line from the windows and past my left side, taking maybe ten seconds to do so. I could feel a strong tingling sensation in my face and left side as it passed by me and out through the wall immediately behind the chair and into the bedroom. I had a definite sense of 'alive-ness' about it rather than it being some kind of inanimate effect. Looking back at it now, the first thing you'd expect me to do would be to scream like a girlie and run. But I didn't because I was torn between fascination and "Whu'???". My mind had a few stabs at trying to figure out what I was seeing and what could be causing it; but there was nothing. I gaped. I could probably have gaped in the Olympics and done very well, thankyou. But though I'm being funny about it now, it's probably more disturbing to me now than at that actual moment. If it was real, was it conscious? What did it want, if anything? If it wasn't real what did it mean about my sanity? Was it maybe the herald of a stroke? Funny things go through your mind that must sound silly now. Anyway, I'd sat for maybe 20 seconds, still in a state of advanced 'Whu?' until suddenly I felt the tingle again on the same side. The shape soundlessly passed by me once more and out the windows into the garden. Everything that I'd managed to come up with in terms of rational explanations for it collapsed. I could really look at it this time, a second chance to prove it as a mundane event of some kind. But I couldn't. It just came and went and I had no logical explanation. Interesting though. CarlD |

In all seriousness, have you had your blood pressure checked lately ?
There are a number of physical symptoms that could possibly produce your experience.

Thanks for your concern, but this was about 8 years ago:)
I'm very interested in both psychology and neurology, but even TLE doesn't fit for this one. There are other options that'll create the illusion of an external dark shape by blotting out parts of vision; but I saw it go behind the chair I was sitting on so it couldn't have been an internal physical phenomena. I'm more inclined to neurological, but I have no idea what. Or of course it could be the real thing... |
