Hey guys,
I'm trying to make my own karate coin because I have freakishly small hands. I own a dremel and a 300 piece bit set...what are the best bits to use to make a karate coin from say, walking liberties? |

You might want to reach out to The Karate Kid, Eric Jones here on the Café. He goes by the handle "godhandz" here, and his Karate Coin routine is the best out there, bar none. His coin is a bit different too, but what it allows you to do is as different in the routine as it is between a Mustang and Maserrati. Give him a holla, he's a great guy and you'll be glad you did. The cat's a very talented magician. Perhaps he can help.

Daniel Garcia goes over how to make a karate coin in Volume 2 of his Project DVDs. The effect is called CHI.

I'm friends with Eric and he's not online right now but I have my dremel at hand! I'm gonna wait till I talk to him anyway, just seeing what was out there. AND YES, by far his karate coin is one of the most commercial routines out there. I have no idea why it hasn't been published yet

I made my own in the past...it's best (at least for me) to start with a small hole and gradually build to the size you want...hope this helps.

Twisted,
Let me know how you make out with the K coin. I've been considering one too. A way for the average guy to make the coin look more like the finger busted thru it rather than with just drill a hole would be cool. |

No no, I'm making the just drill a hole. You can buy one busted out in the middle from Sterling Magic and I have one but I want just the hole through it. To me, it looks more magical. Thanks a lot for the advice Mike!

I made mine out of a silver dollar. The way I did it was pretty much the way Mike Gallo said by using a small bit than moveing up to a large one. I use a large washer and another one a size or two smaller. The reason for the washers is to keep the rest of the coin from bending up as the bit cuts through the coin. Clamp the small washer to the coin with it's center where you want the hole to be (I off set mine just a bit). using a small bit I drill the first hole.
Then clamp the larger washer to the coin and drill the larger hole. Use a file to smooth out the inside, and you should be good to go. Hope this helps, Joe

I put a half dollar between a piece of wood and a piece of fiberglass. Then I put some weights around it to hold it in place, and drilled the center out so the coin diddnt warp. I was fairly pleased with the result

If I were to make one, I'd want the torn edges. I'd rather make the bottle cap version, that David Acer does, rather than having to shoot at a coin with a rifle. lol

"A rifle," that's pretty funny...
Hi Al, have you ever seen godhandz do his version of this trick??? It is far superior to the original effect, using the modified karate coin with the just the hole. It enables you to do so much more with it. It's brilliantly done in Eric Jones' hands (godhandz) and he has shown this to the top guys out there and they all rave about his handling of the effect. To my knowledge, he created it using this modified karate coin. Try to get a look at it, I think you'll see there's really no comparison. Just my view.

Godhandz, I've heard a lot about your handling in this effect, that it's quite well done and essentially, quite brilliant. Wondering if you released this yet to the magic community? The people here that speak about it, seem to find it just awesome...Is it your signature effect?
Also, I went to Vinny Marini's website to check on this upcoming dvd, La Famiglia and I see you are mentioned as being a part of it. That's exciting to be a part of such a project with what looks like a fine aray of good coin magicians. Vinny seems like he's been at this a long time and you can't go wrong with that guy Mickey Silver on the lineup. It should be a popular dvd and I can't wait to see your work on it. Would that be your Karate Coin effect...I hope, I hope.

Kevin, the effect wasn't my cup of tea until I saw Eric's routine. If he ever publishes it, it's definitely something I'd work on, and I'll bet you would too.

From what I;ve been hearing about it, and from Eric's avatar photo, it seems interesting. I'm sure the version of Karate Coin that I'm familiar with is the most basic, unexplored version in existence. Something I'll keep in mind.
