So sorry for asking what is probably something I really should know, but I don't really use this type of magic much at the moment. What does a Chop Cup actually do? The only cups and balls I ever owned were the little plastic ones you get in magic sets, and as Cups and Balls are standard I think I should really own a set. I just want to know what sort of effects I can acheive with a chop cup.

You spill a ball out of the cup and really put the ball in your pocket.
snap your fingers and it's back..... under the cup. that kind of thing.

Without giving away the store, I can add that the chop cup uses a mechanical principle to accomplish this.

Here is a video clip of Don Alan doing his (rather famous) chop cup routine on a TV show. It will give you a good idea of what is possible with the chop cup and how an audience can react. It's a real joy to watch and study. Don Alan, of course, was a master magician and outsanding with the chop cup. From what I read, he spent lots of time analyzing the possibilities of the cup before developing the routine you see here. From my own study of the chop cup thus far, it seems like most other well-designed routines have borrowed from Alan's. And, the good news is that Don Alan's routine is in print.

There have been lots of chop cup routines, but all in all, the Don Alan routine really kind of "does it."

In addition, a chop cup can be part of a "combo set", where it is paired with other identical cups that are not chop cups. This allows flexibility to use the chop cup as a regular cup or as a chop cup.

Chop cup is great - for kids, close up and cabaret...
although I have noticed that tennegers seem to know how it works quite frequently - unlike adults! f |

I knew it was worth the effort to capture the Don Alan segment from the That's Incredible reunion.
That was a couple of years ago, when I was first learning how to grab TV on the computer. Glad so many people have enjoyed it! Jeff |

Try this....use a paper or plastic cup for an impromptu "chop cup" routine. Just carry the set of balls and you're all set in a moment's notice.
Oh. You'll also need a TT and that little something extra.

Bill Palmer's "The Merlin the Magician Leather Chop Cup" must absolutely be mention in this thread!
I got Bills cup today and I can not praise it enough! Very very good quality, perfect size, and the price is a steal! I have had many Chop Cups during my almost fifty years in magic, but this is IT! Thanks again Bill! Thomas |
