This just came in through SAMtalk:
My name is Dan Iwanski and I am a student at Tiverton High School in Tiverton RI. This year I have to do my senior project, a year-long research project on a talent or hobby. For my topic, I chose street magic tricks. A component of the project is to secure and meet with a mentor, either a magician by profession or hobby, for 15 hours between now and march. Unfortunately, I've been having trouble locating any magician who is available to help me. I was wondering if you could refer me to any magicians in the Newport RI or Fall River MA area. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Dan Iwanski 526 Highland Rd. Tiverton, RI. 02878 (401)-624-2512 |

Why don't you just shove him in a pickle jar and add him to your freak show?

Mario,
That's a heck of an internship! Very educational, though. Yours, Paul |

I can tell you this. I live in Providence, RI. I have a license to perform in Providence, but haven't worked up the act (or the nerve) to do so. On a recent visit to Newport, I went to City Hall and asked there about the requirements for a license to perform on the streets in Newport. I was told Newport does not tolerate independent performers on the street. I would have to be associated with a fair or festival in the area. (Which I'd done in the past BTW, a good many years ago, I performed at the Clam Chowder Festival in the Newport Yachting Center.) And, even then, all payments would have to be arranged by the fair or festival. No performing for tips would be allowed.
Not very helpful, but there it is.

No, the burghers of Newport killed it. Seriously though, the kid in question has acquired a mentor through SAMtalk. It's more humane that the internship that Mario proposed.

Oh good. I hope he discovers the RISM (Rhode Island Societies of Magic) which meets in Cranston. I was going to bring that up, but he was talking specifically about "street performers."
