This is Einstein's fable problem that supposedly only 2 percent of the world could solve. And in that rare case you do, please don't post the solution let some people have some fun. And don't spoil it for your selves by 'Googling' the answer, its possibly but takes some time.
Here we go: There are 5 houses sitting next to each other, each with a different color, occupied by 5 guys, each from a different country, and with a favorite drink, cigarette, and pet. Here are the facts: The British occupies the red house. The Swedish owns a dog. The Danish drinks tea. The green house is on the left of the white house. The owner of the green house drinks coffee. The person who smokes "Pall Mall" owns a bird. The owner of the yellow house smokes "Dunhill". The owner of the middle house drinks milk. The Norwegian occupies the 1st house. The person who smokes "Blend" lives next door to the person who owns a cat. The person who owns a horse live next door to the person who smokes "Dunhill". The person who smokes "Blue Master" drinks beer. The German smokes "Prince". The Norwegian lives next door to the blue house. The person who smokes "Blend" lives next door to the person who drinks water. The question is: Who owns the fish?

I don't remember the solution, but I solved it some years ago, while I was a student. It's difficult, but I think it's difficulty is overestimated. I have solved many enigmas similar to this one, and many were as difficult as this one. When you know how to think to solve this kind of problems, you can do all of them.
Of course, this doesn't mean it's a simple problem... it's really an head breaker This evening I'll try again to solve it. Happy solving to everyone! Dave |

I think I've got it. Took me a while. I'll check Google.

Just go for it. It _is_ a fun problem. I saw two different routes to solving this problem. The first is to sort the statements so you can go through them once and always write something in your matrix. Sometimes you write two or three possibilities then use logic to choose which ones are invalid. This is the fun way of solving it.
The second way is a no-brainer and I'll tip it later if people want to hear it. It will solve any problem like this one and you hardly have to think. /Tomas |

If the latter solution is what I think it is, then the last time I tried Google, you would not believe the sites I discovered!

Google offers some nice resources. Found a nice tutorial and some nice LISP code. And a nice page for constraint problems.
How are folks doing on the ethics and Wiki problem?

I got it. Pretty Cool, I try to eliminate the possibities, that is how it goes, very similar to Murder We Wrote.

There was never any mention of a fish.

That is the point, we need to figure out who has the fish.

The Possible way to do this is ask them.

My point is - you're just assuming the other guy has a fish.
He might not, he might have a snake or something. Knowing Einstein's work, I can see the solution being as simple as "there is no fish" |

Hell yeah Baby, I got it!!! It only took me an hour and a 45 minutes.
It is similar to playing minesweeper on the computer. One clue leads to another, then you eliminate. Now I can go to bed. zzzzzz Miguel Rangel

I must add that giving out the answer is no clue to how to get the answer. In fact, by the time you are done, you should be able to to tell which countrymen has what, what position they live in, what they drink and smoke, and what pets they own, not just who owns the fish. The journey is well worth it. Miguel Rangel
