Well, not exactly "in the air..."
"On The Air..." I will soon embark on numerous radio interviews to promote a magic related product. I need some ideas for mentalism effects that might work for a radio listening audience. I don't want to do an effect just for the DJ's. I want to make it amazing for those at home too! I really want to avoid the "move three spaces to the left, now two spaces down..." type of effects. Keep in mind that the effects can't be long and drawn out either... Air time is precious. Any ideas? |

Yes, I did a lot of this type of mentalism in and around Berlin`s radio-stations. If you want some ideas, contact me by private mail!

Hi Mike,
I'm scheduled to do several radio interviews to promote my new video, "Magic 4 Morons." It teaches the viewer ten amazing tricks to amuse and astound their friends and family. It co-stars comedian, actor, and sound effects genius, Michael Winslow (the guy who made all the noises on the "Police Academy" movies. To check it out, cut and paste the following into your browser. Go to libraryvideo It will also be available from magic shops nationwide in December! |

so is this tape for the general public exposure of how magic effects work?
you going to expose any radio magic ideas people share with you too? |

Why use mentalism if you are promoting magic??? Shouldn't you be looking for magic tricks you can do on the radio?
Isn't one of the questions asked on the radio going to be about if the trick you have just done is explained in your video? Paul. |

...and the "tricks" on the video are all YOURS ..am I right?
I prefer performing magic instead of trying to SELL secrets to EVERYONE. P |

Thanks, I'll check it out! Mystic1 and Brainman: FYI, This is a beginners video with beginners tricks that are public domain... And yes, it is for the general public... You know, kind of like those magic sets down at your local toy shop... If you are performing any of the tricks on this video in your "professional" act, might I suggest that you seek another vocation. It's been said before but obviously bears repeating: "Every Professional was once a beginner." This video teaches (not exposes)...TEACHES beginners the effects while paying homage to the art of magic. Who are you to judge me or my project!? If you don't wish to assist me with my posted question, then don't reply to me at all. |

I'd like to expand on Pauls reply.
It is clear you're a magician, not a mentalist (which, of course, is perfectly fine). So please don't destroy for your fellow mentalists by doing mental effects that are presented as, and/or appears as, a "trick". I suggest you pose the question again, but in another forum, or that this thread is moved. (No offence intended Lyndel! Really!) Good luck! |

Lyndel,
I am afraid I would have to concur with Matias and Paul. Whilst mentalism seems the obvious choice for radio work, if its not your area of expertise I would stay away from it. A similar thing would be a true if a mentalist said something on the lines of "Hey, I need a killer card trick". They are quite separate skills and you quite simply don't have the time required to establish the skills you need. The warnings are really there to stop you falling flat on your face. This would not be great for your promotion. So what does this leave you with? Well it might seem pointless, but what about performing to the DJ - this used to be done in days gone by. You have to be careful to ensure that the DJ doesn't just sit there quiet, he needs to talk about what you are doing so people can imagine what you are doing. Choose something that's easy to describe. Perhaps make use of a trick that relies on audio (a simple example is which matchbox is the coin in - FM broadcasts in stereo which you could use to your advantage). Perhaps perform a card trick where a caller names a card and do a card through window. Let the DJ do the talking about how amazing it is. Stick to what you know and you should excel at it as long as you understand the limitations of radio and think accordingly. Regards, Kris Sheglova

Do the Ambitious Card for the DJ. It's open ended; you can stop at any time if there are any time constraints, as there well may be on radio.

I think this is a very good opportunity think about what's exposure and what's teaching. I think that it's very hard to draw the line. If we can't teach beginners, magic will eventually stop to exist. There are magic boxes being sold to anyone. I personally think it's a catastrophe that they usually contains a TT. I think we need clearer rules of what is exposure and not. I can't see any congruency in the way many magicians reason: "This is exposure, but this exact same thing made by THIS guy, isn't exposure!" I have no particular persons in mind, so don't take offense
Lyndel, good for you that you have managed to do something that you like. Good luck! Mikael |

Lorayne's "Numero Uno" would be a good card trick for doing on radio with the DJ.It's a strong card trick, relatively quick, and the second climax involves the person counting the cards cut off to prove you really did cut the exact amount he named to find his card. The DJ is prompted to count audibly so listeners share in his checking/confirmation.
It's in Harry's lecture notes and his new book. Paul. |

Why not just perform one of the trick that comes in the video. This would seem to be good marketing strategy.

You could do some "reverse/subtract" number effects (and dress them up) or the "gray elephant in Denmark" bit. Those are pretty much in public domain and may fit your target audience (morons?!! LOL!).
Another point is to do regular magic (from your set)and have the DJ describe what's happening so the audience can "see" it. You additionally coax the DJ to describe what he sees by asking him if this is in fact what sees. (This idea of getting the DJ to describe what's going on is from Banachek's Radio Magic.) Asmayly |

Asmayly,
Whilst it would be nice to think Banachek invented the idea of getting the DJ to describe what's going on, it simply isn't true. The various radio magicians of the 1950's and 1960's did the same thing. However if this is explained in 'Radio Magic' it is good advice. Regards, Kris Sheglova

Kris,
Yes, I think Banachek mentions Dunniger, et al, doing this as well. I was trying to point to where I knew the actual advice to be as I didn't want it to seem like I was this big authority on handling radio shows. Asmayly |
