Hello everyone
Next year I am wanting to start to take my magic to the next level. One thing that has always interested is presenting magic in a biblical aspect. I have always had the thought in the back of my mind, toying with what I had already. However as of late, when figuring out what I want to do next year this idea seems to be working its way to the for-front. That being said, I am looking for any and all guidance that you might be willing to share. I am currently browsing through the older posts and have already found some wonderful tid-bits. However, anything else that you would be willing to add would be wonderful. Thank you for your time Paul C. |

In working up good Gospel routines (and general routines too), I turn to Robert Neale and Eugene Burger. Both have theological training, and it shows in how the work some of their effects.
I am not saying that your Gospel routines come from them, but you can use their thinking in piecing together the effects you want to do and how you want to do them. I also have found that the book, "Mystery School" has been helpful. Again, it gets my creative juice flowing. Not the only way to go about it, but one I felt like sharing. John |

Glad to hear that you have been looking though the past posts. Many come to The Magic Café, find a foum they like and immediately start asking questions before they do the work that you have done.
My first advice, continue (I am assuming that you have already begun..) praying. I know that goes without saying, but since I find myself praying when everything else fails, I am reminded to pray before I fail, and so I will say it anyway. OK, now on to the question. What kind of magic do you do? Stage, parlor, closeup? One thing I might suggest is to find other Christian Magicians in your area. Iron sharpens Iron, and finding someone who shares your faith, and your interest in Magic is a tremendous benefit. Whether or not you connect locally, vist Duane laflin's site http://www.laflinmagic.com, and Andre Kole's site http://www.andrekole.org Also visit the International Fellowship of Christian Magicians web site fcm.gospelcom.net and there are lots of links there to a variety of Christian magician's web sites. Read and re read the posts above, great advice.
I would like to give you a perspective as you seek to find what works for you and how to share the gospel. I am convinced that a Christain magician should perform magic of a quality no less than a secular magician. All to often I see people justify using less than qualtiy built props or routines that do not captivate the audience. I see magicians use their message as an excuse to not develope and work their routine, to not spend the time nessacary to practice and rehearse a routine and to polish it to a professional level. Never, never let your magic suffer because you are a Gospel magician. Don't cram a trick into the show for an easy Biblical point. Don't try to fit a Gospel application to your favorite trick so you can do it in your gospel show. Don't follow this for the sake of the magic, do it for the sake of the Gospel. Your message will be the most powerful when your show is at its best quality. It is tougher to be a Gospel magician than a secular magician if you hold your message and your magic to a proffesional level, but I feel that is a must. Pray, read your Bible and find the message God wants you to share. (remember it is not your job to save anyone, only Jesus can do that, it is not your job to convict anyone only the Spirit can do that, it is your job to share God's message)Then find magic that fits your style of performance and fits your message. You may have to alter the trick or its appearance. Develope your show and your message from the begining. I believe you will save yourself from developing some bad Gospel magician habits if you approach things this way. I believe you will gain credibility for your program and Gospel magicians as a whole but most importantly you will be a more effective minister. |
