Hi all,
I have been using axtell puppet for quite awhile and using it at all shows.. They are nice and children like it very much... But, there are several problems with the puppets: It does not have a good grip in the mouth. Should they have a piece of elastic thingy attached to the upper mouth, so that the hand can put in it and have a firm grip. Because the head is made of latex, its has a nice look... but.... the mouth tear easily after 6 months of shows... sighz... what do you guys think? |

Axtell puppets seem to be very durable. Of course like any flexible latex product, it can tear if it is stressed enough. Under normal use they will last a long time. I have Vern and I am more concerned about his feathers coming out or getting messed up than I am about the latex tearing.
Axtell makes a "head-liner" for the puppets. They are foam inserts that fit inside the puppet's head. Some performers prefer them and some do not. I guess it is just a matter of what works for you may not for someone else. If you are having problems with the grip these might help. They are very inexpensive and they are removable, so it woulnd't hurt to try them out. Regan

Almagic,
I share your concern about the fit on the hand. I'd like a snug sure grip, with no slop. My fabric puppets all have staps on the upper and lower mouth oieces and they give a sure grip. I'm thinking of making an insert out of 2 pieces of stiff cardboard, shaped to fit the mouth. Cover the cardboard with duct tape and hinge the pieces together to form a unit. Attach straps of fabric on each and size it to fit. Then put double-sided foam tape on it to hold it in place. I haven't tried this yet. Oliver |

The simple way of removing slop around your fingers is to Insert foam above them to the desired thickenss. If you prefer cover the foam with fabric. We also sell a foam product called "Headliners" that fits around your 4 top fingers, and another pocket around the thumb. You can see these here http://www.axtell.com/catresor.html
With latex puppets you want to keep the malability of the mouth. This is one of the fantastic features of Axtell puppets...making expressions. Inserting rigid mouth plates so that elastic can be attached would limit the flexibility. Good discussion. Ax
