What do people use for Daub? Expert card technqiue has some suggestions but I was wondering if people has their favorite alternatives?
I've got a book (name escapes me) which has one or two tricks using daub - does anybody know of a a more comprehensive reference? |

Isn't Daub just a way of invisibly marking cards? why not just force a card? I don't understand.

Good friends of mine: HersheyMagic.com /store location in Harrisburg, PA. Is a distributor/maker of "DAUB." Keith Hanshaw, Tom Naran, and Mike Johnson.
Yes, it is a card marking system. So clean, and so very useful. Visit HersheyMagic.com for more details on it, or just look in any upcoming MAGIC magazine- they should have an ad in there. Their product gets a top rating from me-since I use a deck of cards daily. My way of using daub/the way they demoed it to me is for an ultimate "Out of this World" routine. So many possibilities though. Hope this helps... Best regards, Matt Tomasko USO Magi

Wouldn't using card or flesh-coloured makeup be just as good (and cheaper...)?

PapaG,
I was thinking the same thing. In some old reading, I remember something about makeup as daub. Thing is, I have never used it and know no effects for it. Peace, Parson

I'd heard that silver colour waterpaint can be used as a sort of reflective daub but I wasn't sure what daubs get used in practise.

But if it is just used to find a card, why not force? tell me if Im wrong.

Daub is a marking device. It's not a concept that allows you to force. Just find. Think of it like this: You have a blue backed deck- and one red backed card. You stick the one red card into the center of the blue pack. Square up the deck, and then spread them out again. That one red backed card is so very easy to find, yes? Same with Daub. Here's a routine w/ Daub:
Mark all the red cards using Daub on their backs, and shuffle them into the deck. So now you have all the red cards marked- so you know without even looking at them that they are red. Just alone you have many possibilities here. You could now say, "I'm going to make two piles; but without even looking at the cards face- I'll distinguish and magically know whether or not it's a black or red card." You then deal all the cards out. The ones that are marked go to your right (hence all red cards), and the black cards will end up on your left (the unmarked cards.) Patter for the effect in this example was lame, but you could come up with whatever you wanted. Hope this helps. Getting back to your force idea. The only way you could use it as a force is to mark a card in advanced. Know that card, and then force it on them via any method. Then if they place it back in; you could have them shuffle. And then proceed to do a "lie detector" effect. Yes? No? So many things you could do. Hope this helps some, Best regards, Matt Tomasko

What kind of makeup would be good for daub? I've heard the Daryl once recommended the use of some make up by revlon for daub but I've yet to find an actual reference to this.
I assume the make-up based daub is to be used for red backed cards so as not to stain the fingers? |

Here's some additional info. for you all. Good friends own this store and are makers of Daub. Hope this helps,
http://146.82.67.27/Merchant2/merchant.m......de=TOP10 "This daub is great! I examined the cards for quite a while and I didn't see anything unusual or out of place. I was amazed when the red and black cards were instantly separated simply by reading the secret markings on the backs. Now, I'm a believer!" Daryl - The Magician's Magician Daub is a card marking material and a closely guarded secret in the gambling world. Used by professional gambling cheats, this method allows the gambler to mark cards "on-the-fly" during play. This is the real deal and is now available for magicians! Imagine, borrowing a deck of cards and creating a key card by placing a daub mark on the back of a card! Virtually invisible to the untrained eye, this marking system allows you to locate a card FROM THE BACK without ever seeing the face of the cards! Best regards, Matt Tomasko

Hi Matt,
Could you tell us why this daub might be better than other items that we might use? Thanks. Peace, Parson

Parson,
The Daub that I use personally I feel is good in many ways. It's not a residue. It's not sticky. It comes in a waxlike mold. But it's not wax. It doesn't smear or fade as well. The Daub also comes in two colors: red or blue. Pending which deck you prefer and use. I can handle the deck just as if it's a normal deck, but it's truly marked. However when just examining it there is no apparent sign that anything is gaffed, or rigged. The part I like is that I can do any effect I want and I don't need to 'ring' in the deck or prepare it in anyway. The deck is already ready, and the spectators should be preconditioned; thinking the deck is all ok and ungaffed. Just one little mark and that's all it takes. It's small, but if you know what to look for it's just so easy after that. Most people take my deck and look and ponder it. But yet there is nothing to detect. Or so it seems. I put the Daub marking on the angel on the back of the bicylcle card- that's if it's a black card. Some people put the mark elsewhere on the back, but I prefer the angel area. What makes this the best? Personally I would think any other products that you would try and make yourself to create a homemade Daub would uphold all the points I mentioned. That it might be sticky, some kinda goooeee stuff. Would be detectable, etc. I just trust this product over other possibles and ripoffs. This is Daub. Made in secret- I'm not even allowed to watch the owners make the stuff initially. But I have watched the process. Quite a tiring operation though. Lots of work put into this; I can tell you that. Worth the price? Since I work with cards a lot- yes. The reactions from my presentations also are worth it. Try it out. You'd be surprised; I know I was. Undetectable card marking is an unrealized gem of magic. The only thing that is higher than that in my opinion is a memorized deck. Best always, Matt
