Any of Richard Webster's books, whether for the performer or the general public.
I put out one called INSTANT PALMISTRY for mentalists about 10 years ago. I'm currently revising it--it'll be out soon. It details a very simple approach to giving a GENUINE palm reading after only about 15 minutes' study of the book. |

The best beginning book I have is "Instant Palm Reader" by Linda Domin. This has exellent diagrams and very well written with a lot of "patter" to say to the spectator given you at each diagram.
Also "Revealing Hands" by Richard Webster is good. My favorite is a book called " Romance on your hands" by Spencer Grendahl. It is subtitled Palmistry for Lovers. It is geared toward reading hands of lovers, spouses, would-be romantic partners, etc. to determine mutual chemistry and other insights. |

Surprisingly, the "Complete Idiot's Guide to Palmistry" by Robin Gile and Lisa Lenard is a very informative, easy-to-read practical guide to creating effective readings using palmistry.
One of my favorite palmistry references is "How to Know People by Their Hands" by Josef Ranald (1938). Joe Z.

if you want to buy Richard websters try and get "Quick and Effective Cold Reading". Its really good. It's written for the mentalist/psychic. The other ones are written for the lay public! Highly recomend it. Its a palm reading system.

"Palm Reading for Magicians" by Bill Perron is the BEST video I have seen on the subject, is not expensive and is available from Stevens Magic Emporium. I highly recommend it and only ask that you tell them that I sent you.

Hi,
All the above recommendations are very good. I would add 2 to the previous list: 1. The Art of Hand Reading, by Lori Reid, which you can get from Amazon; very informative, rather complete and very useful for fast readings. 2. The second one is not strictly on Palmistry, but is really good for mentalists interested in doing readings based on something other than just cold reading technique. The title is "The Secret to Reading Cards and Clients", by Ron Cain, available from Flora.com. This booklet is mostly on cartomancy, but it integrates Palmistry and Astrology too, to build a fairly comprehensive system of readings. Hope this helps. Eric.

Hi,
I found the Richard Websters "Revealing Hands" had even more in it than the book meant for the psychic entertainer. Great book to have on the topic. Stan |

This might be hard to find, but my favorite is 'The Key To Palmistry' Leona Lehman, a cheap for-the-public paperback published by the Key Publishing Company in 1959. What I like about it is that in 94 well-illustrated pages you get enough material to last a lifetime.
I once had this huge honker of a book, I forget the title, that went into excruciating detail and spent pages and pages on every centimeter to be found on the human hand. After a couple days it just wasn't fun anymore and seemed like I was studying for a test. I'd fallen into the trap that I had to know the name of every nook and cranny and spout it out to the sitter, and that if I didn't someone would know more than me and call me on it. I thought that if I got the meaning ascribed to the Mount of Jupiter on a person with pointed fingers confused with it's meaning on a person with square fingers I'd screw it all up and be instantly identified as a sham and a jackanape. WHAT A CROCK! People aren't grading you, they just wanna know if their job is stable and if they're gonna get lucky. They want you to tell them that they're basically okay and most of the time do the right thing. All you have to do is hold their hand, trace the lines with your finger, and simply answer all the unknown questions YOU would like to know. Maybe mumble something about the line of Luna, maybe not. You simply go through each desire of the human condition and that's all there is to it. No "technique" or scripts or stuff about scars on their left knee. This, anyway, is how I do it and at the point I started forgetting about systems and pre-written material and simply started talking to people was when my readings took on a life of their own and became more genuine. I do this with cards, runes, whatever's lying around. You can find the most basic terminology on any of these subjects in any new age section, often in one volume, (The big book of new age hoo-hah, or whatever) and that's enough. You could probably get it from those little pamphlets next to the astrology scrolls at the grocery store checkout line. You're not there to lecture on the subject, you're there to DO it. If you very subtly interject one of these Border's Bookstore terms into your reading, almost as if you're talking to yourself about it and not them, the sitter's eyes will light up because they've read the book too and know what you mean and see themselves as being informed on the subject. Getting that little glow, after all, is what they're there for. Just talk. Listen. Make them feel good about themselves. I had to unlearn a lot of stuff to be able to see this. |

I second Paul's vote for Bill Perron's video. I was amazed at how easy it was after only one viewing. Talk about sounding like a pro in no time!

I found the Perron video is probably best appreciated while enjoying an entire pot of strong black coffee or a six-pack of JOLT cola.

I second mysticz on the Idiot's guide. It came into stock at the library I work at, so I had a read. It's very informative, and might well be worth a look. There's a whole catagory on Amazon.com of Palmistry books here http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/bro......-1257769 .
Hope this helps.

Ok, Thanx for the Webster comments. I know his work and believe it to be very valuable but... he does mainly cold reading which is not what I am looking for here. In my believe CR plays only a minor role in "enchanting" readings.

As far as I know Richard Webster has dropped out of publishing Cold Reading works and instead is doing very well for himself publishing books for the new age market. I haven't seen them all but the ones I have are excellent.
True, there is some overlap in the info in Revealing Hands (public market) and Quick and Effective Cold Reading (private market) but the public book is very worthwhile having. I recently obtained a second hand book on palmistry, called "The Book of Palmistry" by Sasha Fenton and Malcolm Wright ISBN 1-85613-279-X. I bought it on the strength of Sasha's involvement as she has written some excellent tarot books. The palm book is very good and I can recommend it highly. Also, Wonder Readings by Kenton Knepper and Rex Sikes has a wonderful technique in the first chapter which you can use for palm readings without having to know anything at all about palms...in fact, I wish I had seen thise years ago as I may not have had to learn so much about legitimate palmistry! David,
I also own Wonder Readings and find it helpful in a certain way. But I do have a different approach when it comes to readings, that is why I asked for some book tips. Since you have mentioned KK let me give you an example: If you take "Completly Cold" and see it through the perspective of "Enchanted Evening" I simply cannot find anything enchanting it its method or handling. I believe that "Absolute Magic" should also be applied to CR. This is not necessary if you just want to brush up your pseudo-psychometry routine but if you want to give long and lasting readings knowing two or three systems is a must.
