I always try and make the audience the centre of attention in all the routines I perform but last night I took it as far as I possibly could.
I set myself the challenge of not using the words 'I' or 'Me' for an entire two hour walk around gig. (which for me is pretty tough since I've already used those words nine times in this post). Instead, I tried to use You and Your instead. Some routines the change was minor but in others I had to completely restructure the routines to make them work! For example, in my bill switch routine I talk about how con artists cheat shop keepers using "Bill Folding". Instead, I said "if YOU ever want to con a shopkeeper, this is what YOU should do...." And what was the result? INCREDIBLE! The audience warmed to me sooner, they laughed louder at my jokes, all 20 tables clapped loudly at the end of the routine and I got not one single glare, rude heckle or disinterested look. Since I live in a city of social climbers, business people and public servants. (suits a plenty) this was quite the acheivement. Try it! It works! |

Very nice! Especially in the social affair venues. Its so selfless, like "when you make out your check to your favorite entertainer, there are two o's in your spelling of it." Love it!
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."

Nicholas, I couldn't agree more! I think that is the real key to performing - people get involved with magic to 'show off' or fool their mates - the good magicians go further, and aim everything towards the spectators.
I would say the other real magic words are names. Call people by their first names, remember them, and they will be eating out of the palm of your hand. Simon |
