Is this book suitable for small groups of people or mainly only for theatrical performances and on stage seance?
Thanks

It's the bound voume containing all of the issues of Seance magazine. There are articles and effects that would apply to both situations.

How generalizable is the material for out-of-seance settings? i.e. I'm assuming the effects and suggestions aren't only from rooms in pitch darkness? I love spirit magic but I strive to do impromptu (or seemingly so) effects in as many situations as possible...
I have enough $ for Seance or the new book that just came out by Teller on Abbot's spirit work.... any suggestions on what is more useful / chock-full of ethereal goodness????

House of Mystery is an amazing book (actually 2 books). There are many spirit effects as well as more mainstream effects with silks, paper coils and coins. BUT -- these are all in the historical context of Abbott's performances, inventiveness and spiritualistic debunking. House of Mystery is not a book of tricks--it's an amazing reference work and represents years of research by Teller and Todd Karr.
Abbott's effects like the talking Teakettle or Balsamo wouldn't neccessarily lend themselves to out-of-seance or indeed out of a controlled environment, but do not require darkness. Seance has effects that could be adapted to out-of-seance effects, though the spirit effects are certainly the selling point. You might be hard-pressed to use some of the effects in non-bizarre or story-telling magic fashions; i.e., why would you need a way to make a book fall off a shelf or writing appear on a slate? Not saying it can't be done, you'd just have to be clever. Definitely read the other threads on the Seance reprint for a more indepth list of contents and usage. My two cents, but if you are truly interested in this kind of work, you should own both. |

Thanks Sean!
(I'd love to have both too - but of course - these tomes cost some moolah )...! I think I'll pick up the SEANCE book for sure... although reading about Balsamo the talking skull might be cool Thanks again, Bruce

Especially now that Seance is readily available again and at a more reachable price...even in Canadian dollars.

Does this book highlight ONLY seances or Spook shows as well? I am looking for a good place to learn spook shows... planning one for halloween... a really extreme haunting one...

Hey Joe,
Having talked with you a bit about what you want to do, I don't think that Ghostmasters is what you are looking for. It is a wonderful book on the old time midnight spook shows done in movie theaters. From what I understand what you plan to do is much more intimate, and while I unreservedly recommend Ghostmasters as a book I don't think it will provide you with much info that will be useful for your project. I would suggest Seance as well as Manifestations. And don't forget to search the archives here. Many great ideas have been discussed in this forum. Good luck, Dave |

Dave,
Thanks for the early warning before I add it to my cart! Will definitely look in the archives. However, I doubt that what I really want to achieve can be found here. Thus, the urge to write a book about it. Regards, Joe |

I just picked mine up today - yep - it was worth it!
My favourite parts are not so much the effects as the mood settings, tips on set-ups, utility moves (like hand switching), words of wisdom from the big-guns and so on...

How different is this from Rick Mau's books?
For those who believe, no explanation is necessary; for those who do not believe, no explanation will suffice.
