Ok, To all I pose a question, If you reply I would greatly appreciate any and all advise.
Here is the question. I have a large corporate show, the show consits of doing magic for an entire downtown strip. It is a City Festival, "The Magic of Ice" is the theme, and Ice sculptors from all over come to compete. I am trying to turn myself into a 6' Ice sculpter. This will be outside, and there will be done outside on the strip. Any Ideas? or places to look. Some of my ideas that first hit me with this idea were incorporating a base... ? I don't know if any of you have seen Criss Angel, but he had a disappearance from stage to pool behind audience was great, the part I thought might be fitting was, 2 people shot him with fire extingushers for a few secs as his cover. I thought that might come into play because it sprays cold... I don't know, I have 2 months to come up with the idea. I appreciate any and all advise. Thanks |

Describe the performing situation. People are probably there to look at the ice sculptures. Criss Angel performs for TV and the crowd is there to see HIM, so he's a bad example to use when describing working for a live crowd who are NOT there to see you.
Are you part of a show? Will the crowd be standing and trying to keep warm while watching this show? Is there a stage set-up? Unless you describe the performing situation in great detail, you'll be getting advice from magicians and illusionists who have never done anything similar and you'll end up being more confused than when you started.

Ok I am sorry I confused the room.
Let me make this more clear. The mayor of the city hired me to perform, as I did last year. The theme of the festival is the magic of ice. Yes there are sculptors there to compete, and there are thousands of people walking around. But the performing conditions are this, it is placed in the paper of a time and place were I will be performing 1 special illusion. The media and cameras will be there, this is why I was asking for some advise, I would like to make a great impression. I thought by incorporating the ice with my magic it would add to the show. My general job is to do walk around close up magic for the people in all the shops, hotels, and the people walking around. But one special illusion, that was my choice. So I will have a large crowd and cameras watching, but this will be done outside in a place of my choice. maybe this helps |

OK, another question. Can you get someone to make a life-size ice sculpture of you? I would guess this would mean getting a full body mold made, filling it with water a day or two in advance and freezing it solid, then keeping it frozen while you bring it to the performing site, and frozen all the way up to the time of the performance. Is that possible for you?

I would go with acrylic.
You don't have to keep plastic cold and it's about 10 times lighter than ice.

I'm going to have to concur with Chris. I've SEEN sculptures made with acrylic that look like ICE. , just spray it with some water and your good to go.

I wonder if acryllic will look like ice to the people of St. Joseph, MI who are the ones he has to convince.
Anyway, if you have a plan to come up with this ice sculpture of yourself, you just need a scenario for using it. Example: you get into a plexiglas cabinet. CO2 fire extinguishers provide an ice fog cover. When the fog clears, there you are sculpted in ice. I assume you don't want to stay like that, so we need to use flame throwers or something to return you to a wet, soggy human. Does that fit your plans? Or do you want to reduce the ice sculpture to a puddle of water and you appear high and dry on the top of a near-by building (see Cyril's latest video on this thread).

This isn't your idea exactly but I think it would still be cool. At the beginning of the show have a huge block of ice off to the side of the audience and elevated and make sure something happens so the people notice it. Cover it with a blanket of something a long those lines. Go through your entire show on the stage well away from the block of ice, then at end of your show perform some kind of disappearance and use stairs to appear INSIDE the huge block of ice. To really make it cool you could have your assistants use hammers or something along those lines to break you out of it. What do ya think man?

That's a neat idea BenRoss, but you would probably need a crane or something to hold up the block. Also, there may be a problem with the block swaying when the illusionist leaves the stores and climbs into the box. Just some thoughts.

Don't know if this is possible. But black art...think turn table...Just a thought.
Oh and it will be cold at that time of year. It is already FREEZING here near Battle Creek MI. Just warmed up today...but back on track. I think anything that looks close to ice will convience the audience. It is the matter if it is going to be examable or not. Michael

Still: I'm thinking acrylic sprayed with water, with some smoke or dry ice effect. some blue or purple incandescent light from the inside or the bottom. Could be a darn cool effect.

The problem with using an ice sculpture is that they’re very fragile. Once you make them, you need to either keep them frozen solid or not move them. You can get acrylics that look just like ice, even the Show-Me state!
I do like the BenRoss idea of getting a huge block of ice and materialize into it. Having assistants or someone “chop” you out would be icing on the cake. If it gets cold enough, you could have the block set on stage the night before or something, no reason to hang it. (I remember one Winter Carnival in St. Paul where they couldn’t get the ice sculptures to stay frozen, so you really have to watch your weather.) One way to keep ice “frozen” longer is sawdust. (Remember the old ice boxes where you would get deliveries everyday of fresh ice? That’s how most, if not all, of the ice men kept their ice frozen even in the heat of summer. Good Luck Dave |

I would look to transform from yourself into an ice sculpture with flowing dry ice as the cover for the exchange. If the crwod is controlled you could use a facing mirror style stage/table to do the work.
One path for making the required sculpture to explore, is by finding a company that using 3d router cutting into ice blocks. I have seen this in a signage trade magazine and the company just housed its 3d router inside a freezer unit with a clear window and operated it from the outside viewing in...it worked great...as crazy as it sounds. Cheers, Mark

Depending on how literal you want the effect to be, (not to mention how much budget you have to work with) it might be simpler to use a "themed" prop such as a crystal casket with the edges of the plex "frosted" using that spray-on window flocking that is sold at Christmastime. You could then either simply appear within the "ice chest" or do a switch if a workable "sculpture" can be arranged. The ideas of using dry ice fog or fire extinguishers for cover are great, but I would still have a cloth cover handy if the wind decides not to cooperate...

Johnny. I do have a clue how much it'd cost. But if one is serious about the effect. Then they'll pay it.
I've SEEN huge sculptures that look like ICE out of acrylic. Ask anyone I'm the plastics fanatic. More practical than REAL ICE - but way way way more expensive. big bucks. |

Thank you all for the ideas, please keep them comming...
As far as the first one using acrylic is like it was stated before, that would pose to be to costly for this effect. But what I do have at my disposal if I choose, is a professional Ice sculptor, I saw what these guys can do, and let me tell ya they can get so detail oriented it is scary, and the plus side guys here, is this would not cost me a thing. the idea of appearing on a building was really a good idea, I didn't think of that. But again like was stated earlier this will be a faily big statue, and will be placed where I would like it, but I don't think we would be able to move it. Which my first thought is hiding it.( If I decide to use a sculptor) So many ideas have been given to me I have 4 plans drawn up, I caculating which would be the most cost effective. Again It doesn't have to be a sculptor, Like one email said It could be a block of ice dropped as an escape. and the person filming the illusion wearing a hat or hood, turns in to me. but when the Ice drops it would break into hundreds of pieces, very dramatic.... Thanks again, and any more thoughts appreciated.. Chris |
