To all you working professionals out there... Would any of you be willing to help out a fellow magician?
A lot of times parents will ask me if I have a tape of me performing magic; therefore, I am producing a crude demo DVD and have it almost complete. It is a rough draft that I plan to add to with each show I do. I was wondering if any of the working professionals who advertise with demo DVDs would mind viewing it and giving me some feedback. Just PM me your address and I'll mail you a copy. All I ask is that you give me a review of it. The demo is less than 10 minutes. A little background of myself... I myself am cetainly not a professional; I am a fourth grade teacher and mostly work birthday parties for children in my area. I probably have performed around 40 shows and am still trying to polish and perfect every aspect of my show. I am still developing and perfecting different presentations and patter. Most of my patter is off the cuff, so I am working on scripting etc. The show is almost where I dreamed it could be, and has received a great response from the children and parents. I want to try and take my magic to the next level, but I don't have a mentor or someone who has traveled down the same path before to give me any feedback. I appreciate any help you can offer. Performances in the DVD are: Chico the Mindreader Chicken Sword Wacky Weasel The Thing Sponge Snack Milk Pitcher Coloring Book Rabbit production Mismade flag Liquid Metal Sponge balls card to mouth Thanks, Jason |

Jason,
One of it's Greatest (the Demo) uses is that you can see yourself as you appear to other's. For 35 years I did B'Day Parties as a Hobby. Then I had to make the jump to full time. I thought I was good....until I saw Ken Scott, Tommy Johns, Fred Kirkland, etc. and what they did. I make sure I tape myself once a year now just to see myself. Then some good friends watch last years and than this years and RIP ME APART.....lol. As a result I've become much more Animated, use Greater Vocal Range, much more comedy and Entertainment (which is what we do). Once upon I time I had a public speaking course and one of the tools was that they recorded you and everyperson was amazed at how they sounded to themselves. To this day most people do not know how they sound or appear. My $2.25 worth, (I've been uping my fee's) Aragorn

Send me a copy and I will gladly give you my honest feedback. For what it is worth, all I do are kid shows at the rate of about 500 per year so you'll get be getting an honest review from someone who speacializes in kid shows.
PM me and I will provide my mailing address. |

Thanks for all the support everyone. I will certainly mail out the DVDs to everyone after the holiday. Aragorn, I know what you mean about watching yourself and seeing how you look to other people. It pains me, but I know it is good to reflect. It also is scary to think pros are going to be watching my DVD, but I also know it will help me grow and mature into a better performer. To me, my demo DVD looks pretty good, but I want to get an objective opinion of what other people think of it.

Jason: I truely admire what you are doing. You are really wanting and showing that you want to make yourself successful by taking direct action towards youre own success. Not many people would do what you are going to be doing and I think that not only takes gutts to do, but I respect that.

Greetings my friends...
Do we really have to record an entire act to handout as sample DVD performance. Im planning to make one but limitted to just a few highlights of the act... maybe the ones with the best reaction...maybe the top three or so. Curently,if a client asks for a demo tape...I tell them that I don't have 1 and I simply ask them to visit my website to view some pictures and some Testimonials from past clients... But Im sure a good DVD sample would be great to have... Wanlu

Jason, why don't you upload your DVD to Google and let more of us give you a review. Cheaper than sending loats out through the post.

I would say that you only need clips of your show and the audience response. Not more than 8 minutes of your show highlights. You probably need to get signed permission from the children's parents to show their faces on the video, but that will sell your show.
If you video your entire show you might just find that a few unscrupulous clients will show the video instead of hiring you. I know a number of performers who have had that happen.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Strange-I have never been asked for a video of the show for b-days. Corporate shows sometimes require a demo video, but most parents don't. With that said, it's always good to watch your show if you can, and then let some friends watch it (who are not magicians) so you can see there reaction.
Remember, it's not about impressing magicians-it's about impressing your customers/audience. You will be amazed at how much better you get as you continue to perform-I watch some of my early videos and think, "Man, I can't believe I did that." |

Great advice, Chad C. I was never asked for a video back when I used to do b-days, either. I am rarely ever asked for a video today, except for casino shows.
