What would you teach a 22 year old lady interested in doing magic on stage? Would it be a flower act, dove act, zombie routine, umbrella routine, silks, card manipulation, costume changes, etc.?

My own personal bias is flowers and silk. Manipulation has a slower learning curve and is harder to present and sell on a large stage. Dove acts are a dime a dozen and present a lot of hassles with the birds now days. Umbrellas could be worked in with the silks but by themselves, I think they become quickly boring. Zombie (unless it is a special type of object using the zombie method) again is hard to sell and perfect. Costume changes are tough to do as a single act. To be honest, I think they are becoming overdone by magicians and usually not done particularly well.
I know I sell the stuff but the flowers and silks are the easiest thing to teach and sell as a stage act. It quickly builds confidence and requires a minimum of rehearsel and allows the concentration to be centered on the music and presentation. You could add in a couple of umbrella production with the silks. Maybe a silk dying routine. You a have pretty magician that should do pretty magic. Just my personal opinion. Richard

Dove acts are a dime a dozen...so are female magicians using flowers and silks....My opionion is ask your lady friend what is she more interested in. From there you can gage what you can do with her, who knows she might be the greatist manipulator of our generation. Think outside the box to, Purses, Hair blow dryers, Make-up, mirrors you name it. But if you want to get a founation for her I would reccomend ball manipulation from there she can use this foundation to just about anything...Hope this helps cheers chris

As a female magician just a few weeks shy of 22, I'll offer my opinion. I think your friend needs to do some research and find what aspect of magic interests her most. I've been doing this for almost 16 years and I still find research the most important aspect in starting something new. She also shouldn't expect anything in magic to be instant if she wants it to be well done. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that, but when people begin, they don't always grasp that. There's more to stage magic then the technical skill, theatre plays a huge role and that needs to be addressed. Does your friend have a magic background at all? That will also play into the decision. I say research, play around with a few things that pique her interest, and then choose one to begin working on intensively. There are pros and cons to everything you've listed. Most importantly, she has to have an interest in whattever is selected or it will never reach a performance level. I would be interested in speaking more to you about this, and to your friend. Best wishes!

I'd teach her the same I'd teach a 22 year old male magician.

Thank you for your comments. suggestions and advice. This lady has 2 years experience in dance. She loves to compose her own moves. I was thinking of combining a dance routine together with some magic. She is 5'5" and 104lbs. Slim and sexy.

Might I suggest a dancing Handkerchief rotuine with a silk rotuine intertwined. But I would have to actually talk with the young lady to know for sure. I agree with Nell. Do the research on classic female performers.

If she is good at dance- and even if it was a he who was good at dance
I would teach her the basics--- sorry there are some fundamentals when teaching so start off with the Cards, coins etc. I do not believe that you should go straight to the big stuff--- she will (or he will) benefit from understanding magic tricks like card magic and coins etc. The cup & balls is a good one to learn misdirection and direction-- give her a Svengali deck so she can start entertaing people straight away without years of practice and get her to work on her presentation which is the key to performing. If she is not interested in spending the next 6 months learning before actively performing then I would suggest not teacing her and just send her to the magic shop But with dance routines if you want to ignore my advice. Dancing hank is a given Dancing cane is good full body magic A good teaching bit is for her to be your assistant for a while----no I'm not being sexist I'm just saying she willl get to know a show and the behind the scenes of an act, the preparation to an act. |

Well...I still stick to researching what's out there, but I second learning some basic/classic stuff first. This is for discipline. She could also assist someone with stage magic/illusions in the mean time. It's great training and she'd most likely have fun if she enjoys dancing. Once she finds something that interests her a great deal, run with it and perfect it. Good luck to your friend.
