I own Cane 2 Silks (Fantasio) and I like it, but I have admired (never owned) an appearing cane. It is usually produced while performer holds a silk and whammo! there appears a large aluminum cane. I am thinking the audience reaction might be a slight percentage better with the appearing cane? Anyone of you OWN both but prefer one? Is there a better appearing cane model? Is the appearing cane quick to reset for multiple shows? Is there an end to these questions?
Thanks, aaron |

Thanks Brian, read those posts and it cleared a few things up for me but did not answer these 2 questions:
If you have ever used both, which do you feel got the stronger reaction from the audience? Is the appearing cane quick to reset for multiple shows? So if anyone wants to chime in, still feel free. thanks, aaron |

I have both and would say they both get about the same reaction, but I do like the appearing cane the best. Mainly because it is much quicker to reset. Resets in about two seconds.

Both do get a good reaction. However, if you use the cane to silk you can talk the silks off an use them in the next effect. So it gives your act more flow. The appearing cane is just that and the end of the magic. It is very hard to work into the next routine.
Both reset in about the same time. Richard

I agree in that both can get great reactions based upon how the magician uses the prop in his or her routine. I have used the silk to cane in the past and what always got a great reaction at birthday parties was to have the cane vanish and turn into two colored silks with a large 24" Happy Birthday silk tied in the middle. The way it vani8shes actually causes the silk to appear and then unravel to say Happy Birthday. It was a great reaction type of openerand it allowed the birthday child to feel special.

I prefer the appearing cane, I think it is more surprising. My thinking goes like this; you show a cane and everyone thinks something magical might happen with the cane. You show a silk and the last thing people expect is a cane to appear. Having said that both are surprising and can be used successfully within a show with some thought behind it.

But this goes to show it is not what you do with the cane but the presentation you do WITH it. Both can be quite a magical and fun but it depends upon what you as the magician place into the opener routine. Use your imagination and creativity and a vanishing cane into a big silk can be just as magican and entertaining to an audience as a sudden appearance of a cane from a silk.

I just bought the cane to silk yesterday, so I like Kyle's view! I'm yet to set it up, but have the image of following it with silks...either with a change bag or the changing records trick.

I like the routine of fukai on one of his instructional videos, I forgot the title of it but he has a routine using canes, changing color ones and cane to silks. I like the idea of it, actully I don't understand the explanation of the video 'coz its in japanese so I'm just looking on his hands hen he is explaining... hahaha!
thanks!

Some things we also over-do with reason and routine.
I believe in reason and routine on the whole, and I like that we take a 15 second effect like PB&J and turn it into a 4 minute routine that kills. But for openers, music trax, closers and such, sometimes the audience just wants some eye-candy and for all reasoning and care to go out the window. And for the quick-witted performer to just shut up once in a while. Plus, if you the performer are enjoying it that way - then DO IT. Don't bog it down just for the sake of bogging it down! Good discussion guys, great inputs. aaron |

A routine by David Ginn doesn't make you choose. You start off with the cane to silks then you put this in a Niffen Tube. You close the tube and when you reopen it out pops the cane and the silk is gone.

Nice idea by Ginn, but why wouldn't you just remove one of the silks from cane to silks and have a cane appear from within? Would that work?

If you are familiar with egg magic, an appearing cane from a silk (without the silk disappearing) is a piece of cake. Sometimes you want to use the cane and silk together.

I have seen and performed something of which I think Bob may be talking about. In this version, a silk is produced and shown in fingertips. It is then apparently tied into a knot and when the knot is finished, and the silk ends let go, the cane is seen with the silk tied in the center. It is a very startling and quite magical appearance.

Ive used it it my openning act...After being introduced,I walk in with my cane, say my warm up spiel then the music plays and show starts.
After my gloves to streamer...I hold my vanishing cane...and pretend to clean it with a silk...rub the silk on the cane and suddenly ...youre holding 2 canes...then turn the first cane into silk. Wanlu

An idea, at the beginning to open perform the cane to silks, then use the silk in a routine. At the end of your show, again pick up the silk and from it do an appearing cane. Thus you go full circle.
1. Start with cane 2. Cane becomes silk(s) 3. do show 4. Take silk (routine) 5. Appearing cane 6. end Just a thought Craig

The BEST ever, was the late Karrell Fox and how he used both.
First, he did the vanishing cane in the newspaper, with lots of jokes from the things he was reading in the paper. BTW, the newspaper vanish is WAY better to a lay audience than the vanish to silks. Looks impossible. To end his show, Karrell told a wonderful story about a magic show he saw as a boy and did the repeat silk vanish. The very last thing he did was take that silk from the repeat vanish, and turn in back into the cane he vanshed at the beginning. If you ever saw him do this, you know what I mean. It was in his working act for 30 years..... |
