If you can get a copy of Scarne on Card Tricks (try library)or one of the Karl Fulves books on card tricks you will be doing well. None are hard, in fact most are well within the range of a beginner. It will give you a number of effects you can do while working on some of the harder tricks requiring more manipulative skill. Chances are even if you become a first rate knucle buster you will continue to do at least some of the tricks from those two books.
If you are looking into more heavy manipulation there are people on the card forum who would be more than happy to help you. Best of luck. Frank Tougas

Hey there,
Welcome to the Café. Hope we can help you out. First off though- what kind of 'tricks' do you want to learn? What do you want to study? I could give you so many books/tricks that you could learn, but there are so many sub topics that I could inform you about. If you want manipulation I could recommend Ken Brooks, "Cigarette Manip." Or Joe Mogars book on thimbles. If you enjoyed sleight of hand card magic- I could rave on and on about the Roberto Giobbi collected volumes of, Card College. I think many would aggree that in order for me to help you; just need to find out some more specifics. Seems to me that you're just interested in everything? Do you want to learn coin magic, cards, etc? Keep in touch:) Looking forward to helping you out, best regards, Matt Tomasko

Royal Road is just a starting point to card sleights. So much more to learn. I highly suggest you next get a copy of Hugard/Braue- Expert Card technique to further your study with cards. Encyclopedia of Card Tricks will give you lots of card effects to learn, more than you will ever need in a lifetime in fact. There are so many other good books to learn from and suggestions for them will vary BUT you might also look at a complete set of Apocalypse (Lorayne) which will also give you a lifetime supply of material, sleights, you name it. (Lorayne's Close-up Card Magic is a true classic to learn card material from too)

Themagicman101, that might be a slightly bold statement!
I think the next books in the list are mentioned above - Card College, Expert Card technique and the encyclopdia of card tricks will build on the foundations learned in the royal road. If you wish to move into DVD's, after absorbing what they have to offer, I would recommend Ammars ETMCM, as a good grounding. Find what interests you, then build on the foundations! Si |

I don't know if you are able to do this but go out and watch 10 or 15 magicians perform some card amgic and look at what they are doing. Then you will have a great idea on how to build the knowledge you have from reading RRTCM into practical and fun routines. I do agree absolutly though with the Fulves book.

H. Warrior, Do you mean street magic as in people who actually make their living performing on the street or street magic as in the overhyped stuff done by Blaine or Angel. That is not actually street magic as defined in magic.

I would firmly suggest 'the Art of Astonishment' by Paul Harris, once you have read some of the classic texts written above. He writes beautifully on creating that moment of 'astonishment' that you describe above.
But I would work on what sort of effects interest you - coins, card, etc. Give us some more information on what interests you, and then people will be able to direct you further. Most importantly, however, is that it is the presentation that gets the reactions, not so much the effects in themselves. Sold correctly, the 21 card trick could get great reactions. Si |

I think you are actually asking for a place on the net that gives secrets to tricks, free? I may not be correct. That is something you won't find here.
Otherwise, there are a lot of things you can get fairly cheaply through internet stores, assuming you don't have any magic shops in town. The real good stuff for cards comes from books. You have a lot of good advice above. You may want to try a different approach to start in magic than the "Street magic to fool my friends". Not that anything is wrong with it, but sometimes a guy gets some bad reactions with that approach, and he gives up. Magic can be a passion that lasts a long time. Pay attention to what Sjdavison last said; work on presentation, choose one book to start, learn to be a Magician. Then develop from there. Even David Blaine, and Chris Angel had to work hard at the craft before they got where they are, that's what you must do with most everything worth doing.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

It is full of starts and stops, even a sudden change of course. I'm not suggesting you just do one trick after another scatter gun fashion but they do not necessarily need to be segued one into another. The jarring effect comes when you change your basic personality such as from going from a playful mood to suddenly a super serious one to being a mystic, etc. People see that these are unrelated tricks because obviously each is a set piece. I don't know if I am making this as clear as I'd like. To over exaggerate the above point; it would be like doing a trick where you start, "Back when I joined the circus..." followed by "I have long studied the occult and particularly psycho kinesis..." It becomes jarring to the spectator as you have obviously changed your performing personality to fit a particular trick. It is your connection with your audience that helps hold a number of tricks into a cogent performance. There is nothing wrong with doing a few coin tricks and then switching gears to cards or a rind and string, etc. It has a natural look to it. I may have to elaborate later depending on others ideas, comments and response to your question. Frank Tougas

Well, indeed there is! I would suggest starting with Bobo's coin book - pretty inexpensive.
In terms of routining, I would suggest working on the routines that you like, but use you imagination! Work on one or two effects at a time, get them perfected, and then move on. Old advice maybe, but it is better to do one trick well, than 10 tricks adequately! In terms of effects, there is so much out there, it is hard to know where to start - maybe you could tell us some effects that you perform? The advice I would give though, is to have a strong opener, and an even stronger closer. The rest should be polished, entertaining and magical, obviously, but it should build to a climax. Si |

I’d strongly suggest that you intensify your study of Royal Road to Card Magic before you proceed to anything new. It will take you at least one year to master all the techniques taught in this valuable book, daily practice provided. Ask yourself the following questions: Can I really do a decent pass? A reliable classical force? Is my top change audience-tested? Do I have interesting presentations and scripted patter for, say, 30 of the 78 excellent tricks in the book? Did I arrange them in routines as taught in chapter XIX? If not, you’re still on the Royal Road, not at its end.
