The lady that runs our churches youth ministry asked me to do a New Years themed show. I am at a loss. I usually don't draw a complete blank, however...
Anybody got any ideas? The way I usually do stuff for church is a couple of "ordinary" tricks ending with a big gospel themed trick, hopefully, something that loosely ties to the others. Pretty lame so far, I know, but I'm a workin' on it. Thanks Steve |

A New Year, a New Life in Christ?
I would think that anything which incorporates "New" should work. Torn and restored or cut and restored "Whatever" would also be good to toss in a bit of the old life(cut tattered, torn), and the new life (restored, renewed, whole again) Just some quick thoughts that I hope will encourage you and others to expand upon. Effects that work on Transformation. One thing transformed into something different, or new.
Perhaps a production... the making of something new. Silks from a change bag. Adding two things together to make something new... Dove Pan... cake baking or some production. I use the idea of having many tiny pieces of rope, having the people put each piece into the change bag. In the end they all come together into on long whole piece of rope. It isn't viewed as a restoration but rather when teh people of God come together, something new comes out of it. RevJohn |

Steve,
My favorite message routine is Slydini's balls over the head. Very good opportunity to demonstrate how easily we can be deceived. What part of Carolina? That's home to me. Peace, Parson

Parson,
I like the idea, just wondering how it relates to the New Year theme? Would like to hear more! RevJohn |

Gypsy Thread is always adaptable.
You can also use D'lites to pluck good thoughts, represented by lights - appropo, from books, the Good Book, or people and consume them or put them directly into your head and heart.

Well, RevJohn, it seems to me that New Years is a time for new thinking, changes in what we do, etc.
One of the ways that we might honor God in the New Year might be to not be so susceptible to the world and modern advertising. Just a thought. Peace, Parson

I like the "Torn and restored or cut and restored "Whatever"" old becoming new ideas you and everyone else have come up with, I suppose you could use "2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." definitely going to need some filling out, but, I have the time to work on it. That seems to fit well, and since I am working on ropes at the moment, I guess I'll see where that takes me, while I look for more. Thanks Bro Dave God Bless Steve |

Hi guys, first I want to apologize for taking so long to get back. Sorry .
Next, I want to explain why I answered BroDaves post and then disappeared. I don't know if it is/was a glitch in the Café, or my computer, but after I answered BroDaves post, I got some strange screens and then when I finally was able to get back to this thread, there was no message box in which to reply. It looked like one of those locked topics . I contacted Steve, and by the time I got back here, it was fixed, but I had other pressing problems, and had to sign off. But now here I am and I'm gonna take another crack at this. Thanks for your patience. Steve |

Some good ideas, I like the transformation thing, and when you mentioned the silks, I thought "Metamorphosis" The effect where you start out with cards with a caterpillar on them, and end up with a large scarf with a Beautiful butterfly. I think you can use the deck of cards alone, but the butterfly scarf comes across really well because of the size. And, believe it or not, I just bought a Dove Pan at a yard sale for $4.00. It was never used/ in new condition, and still in the box. The guy I bought it from said you'd probably have to go to a sporting goods store to get directions on how to use it. (Really!) This is a big Dove hunting area, and it did say Dove Pan right on the box. Thanks for the ideas God Bless Steve |

I'm not familiar with Slydini's balls over the head, however, I have been working on the Haydn/Anton, and Desouza endless chain routines, with the same idea in mind. I like the idea of being not being susceptible to the world thing, sort of a "sly as serpents but harmless as doves" sort of thing. Thanks and God Bless Steve Ps I live in Lillington, NC. It's about half way between Raleigh, and Ft.Bragg.(my last army home.) I lived in Belvoir (outside of Greenville) back in 68 & 69. My Daddy is a preacher, and he had a church there. It is also a Very nice Place. How bout you? |

Maybe a Zombie-like takeoff on the ball that drops in Time Square at midnight on New Years.
You might try a bit of "reverse engineering" - read up on the history of New Year's and it's celebrations both here in American and around the world. The things you find might lead you to a lot of ideas you can illustrate with tricks, while at the same time perhaps providing an interesting learning experience for your audience.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I have a set of DLites, but have never used them . Your idea on good thoughts is something I would never have come up with, but I will definitely work on that theme, and see what I can come up with. I much appreciate the help. God Bless Steve |

Thanks Chessmann
I don't have a zombie at present, but I have seen them, and have wanted to make one for a long time, I just didn't have a good excuse... I mean reason . I'll look into the whole thing with the Times square ball drop. Thanks again and God Bless Steve Ps I believe I have an uncle and a cousin that live in your neck of the woods. It seems like a nice area. |

The name does sound familiar, let me think, oh yeah , it's that little town near the highway . (can you imagine anyone from Lillington calling Dunn little? ) When were you home last, and where are you now? Next time you come home we'll have to get together. God Bless Steve |

Any more New Years themed ideas, will be greatly appreciated. I still have to choose what works best for me, and then figure out some kind of order. So I am still wide open for ideas, and other people will be helped by this info also, at least I hope so, I sure get a lot out of reading the threads here.
Thanks Steve |
