Can anyone suggest some fun routines where the spectator is shown to be a genius.
For example, Out Of This World presented as a rain man effect where you spread the card face up and have them 'memorize' the order of as many cards as possible. They then sort them into reds and blacks from memory! (s*****r deck) |

Nice idea, that, for OOTW. Thanks,

Mentalism Incorporated, Vol. 1 has a great routine in it called, "Learning The Almost Impossible." In this routine, the entire audience legitimately learns to say the alphabet backwards in less than five minutes.
There's also J. K. Hartman's “Memorease”. Out of three spectators, one is given a magic amulet, and only that spectator is able to remember a list of 10 or 12 letters after being shown it only once. It's in Chronicles No. 28, as well the much easier to find “Self-Working Number Magic”, both by Karl Fulves. It's based on Bob Paul's routine "Memory" in Chronicles No. 22. James Biss has a great routine in "Mainly Mental" in which you start filling out a 4 by 4 grid by apparently reading the minds of the spectators. You stop, ask one spectator to say verbally what number he/she is thinking of. They respond with a number, but you mention that it doesn't seem right, and write it outside of the 4 by 4 grid. You continue filling out numbers by reading people's minds. When the 4 by 4 grid is filled out, it's a magic square that totals the one number verbally mentioned by the spectator! |

Lennart Green also has some ideas for OOTW and the spectator. Check out his lecture notes and his DVD:s

Here is a list of ideas I have so far (no methods yet)
Spectator adds up three 4 digit numbers correctly. Spectator counts hundreds of toothpicks in a second. Spectator determines what day of the week someone was born from hearing the date. Spectator solves a puzzle that no one else can (fast and loose?) Spectator "memorises" a book. I'm really looking for ideas which would play well on stage. |

I "memorise" the order of the reds and blacks (and rapidly deal the cards into two piles myself) before guiding someone else through the process of memorising the cards and having them do the dealing. It just seems to have more resonance.

Nicholas,
You might want to have a look at Tony Binarelli's 'Millennium Supermentalism', published in the March 2005 issue of "The Linking Ring".

Do you think OOTW would play for an audience of 100-120 in a studio setting?

I remember Derren Brown using this as a hook long before I saw anyone else doing it. This was his version of both OOTW and Card At Any Number. During his walk around days.

Luke Jermay's version of OOTW - Each card can be shown to the audience as well.

Gregory Wilson's "Mental Giant" from the Stockholder booklet fits the bill. It is a magic square effect.
Thanks, Elliott |

The background of this routine is to take part in a short medicine show routine. I drink the elixer and perform feats of mental acrobatics (magic square and bob cassidy's card memory routine) and then have the SPECTATOR drink the tonic and HE can perform a similar feat.
