OK... I might be grasping for straws here, but here goes.
One of my favorite effects for one-on-one magic with cards is what I believe is called "Lie Detector", taught to me by a good friend many years ago. It is the effect whereby you have the person select a card, and then I say that I will ask them three questions, and they may tell the truth, or they may lie, but the cards will tell what's true... and what's a lie. The questions being the color, the suit, and the number. Each question's answer is spell-counted out, and the prediction cards, turned over at the end, reveal the true answers to the questions, and the chosen card. My problem comes in here... I am wishing to use Tarot cards (sans Major Arcana and Knaves, leaving a regular deck)... but now, rather than Red and Black cards, and C, H, S, or Ds, I have Wands, Clubs, Swords and Pentacles. Those who know can see the obvious problems there. I have come up with an interesting partial answer, and it is this: Wands = Virga Cups = Poculum Swords = Gladius Discs = Orbis. Yes, the "original Latin" names for the ancient suits (it works in my performance venue and style...). Note that Virga and Orbis have something important in common, as does Poculum and Gladius. So I have suit names that CAN work. What I am looking for is a good magical thinker out there who may wish to wrap his or her brain around this interesting challenge to come up with a way of differentiating the suits from each other in a binary way that will have the right numbers and will match up with the above latin words to set the "prediction" cards appropriately. Alternately, does anyone know of a "Si-like" situation with a fuller deck- that includes the Knaves, or a selection of the Major Arcana, which might extend things in such a way as to allow other words to work properly. Any well-thought ideas are appreciated. I have already thought of the idea that I might better spend my time elsewhere, so for those of you with that suggestion, all I can say is, "Hey, great minds think alike". I am stubborn however and believe that I have the beginnings of something wonderful here, but I need help creating it to a workable level. Of course, there's always the possibility of a Tarot Deck that I don't yet know of which would have Black wands & disks, and Red Cups and Swords... Thanks for anyone who wishes to help create this. I'd love to be able to do this with Tarot, and hope that others out there using these types of presentations might benefit as well. Best, Dave Xanatos |
