My question is, can you really make a living today with material that was written pre-1970? Did the old masters really know their stuff so well that it still holds up today with modern audiences?

There are magicians making a living with the cups and balls and they are thousands of years old!
The methods will always work, as they say, nothing is new in magic. The routine will need a little updating probably, but it will anyway to fit your style, even if it was written in 2005 |

There have been worthwhile innovations in recent years, but for the most part, the basics haven't changed much. Not mentalism related, but Ricky Jay did a very well received show in New York that was taken verbatim from the 100 year old book, "Expert at the Card Table." In my opinion we could use a lot more innovation and originality, but on the other hand if you have your own fresh presentation style, there's no need to reinvent the wheel. |

IMHO? The books teach principles. Updating them or adapting them is up to you! And is the REAL fun of it!

A nice way of proving this is to disect something current like DB's tv shows (the gathering is a good one) and how a lot of relate it to 13 steps if not in method then in deceptive principles.

Some good books being sold on eBay auction are almost closing. Does anybody know about Arcanum Tarot by Harry Meier? Or what about Mind & Matter by Stephen Minch?
Thanks. |

Not to dwell on Derren but...many of his effects are Corinda and Annemann based.
As has already been said, the basis of all mentalism hasn't changed. |

A mentalist's methods can be old...or new
What is critical is that your "presentation" be fresh, fast and entertaining. It must be believable...yet amazing. The real fun for me is creating (and then fine tuning) a routine. Chuck Hickok |

I have a pretty good library of Mentalism, but that particular book is the one that got me off my backside to start performing. I've done magic in the past and I've been doing readings for 12 years but never gone the whole hog and done a pure mentalism show. I did my first fully fledged Mental show last week, in a foreign language to boot! The act kills and it's heart is 70 years old. |

What was the name of that husband/wife mindreading act from the late 40's ? The Piddingtons (sp ?) or something like that.
I was listening to some tapes the other day - killer stuff ! The act was full of suspense with some outrageous scenarios, really very cool for a 50+ year old act. I don't think human nature changes that fast, as noted above maybe some updates are in order. Oh, and another thumbs up for Stuart Cumberlands Annemann rewrite. |

I had a few false starts and wasted opportunities...and I was reasonably happy as a reader. I was also concerned as to how branching out into performing might affect my readings business...and what with so many people (as this board is sometimes testament to) ready to jump on anyone using the "psychic" word I stayed out of it.
Anyhow, my circumstances have changed considerably and I am not known for readings in the area I currently live. An opportunity to perform came up and even though there was a language barrier, I decided to plough ahead. And I am glad I did. And I'm even gladder I plumped for the Annemann act. PS> Just to be clear the heart I refer to as being 70 years old isn't mine, it';s the Annemann act's! |
