Well, Ive just got back from my first paid gig. For about a year I've only done little bits here and there in numerous places while I refine my act. All I can say is wow!!!!!! What a great feeling it was. There were about 14 kids from 3-5 and an 8 year old. what a great experience. The more I perfomed 'look don't see' 'magician in trouble' and 'hurting the magician' the funnier it was. Thanks to all those on the Café who have helped and given advice.

Now that you know you can "sell" your show, how do you intend going about selling it some more? are you planning to stick to childrens magic or are you seeking out other forms of entertaining with magic?
Sorry if I sound a little bit prying - I am just curious, as I am sure others are too, to hear from you on this particular topic. Dani |

Well I have a few booked up for next year already. My mentor and another childs entertainer at my club are retiring end of the year so all their business is coming my way. My old job hold functions such as parties and christenings that have asked about a magician and my new parttime job have put me in their broshure already. I also do adult magic which I have done for 3 years and am currently looking for ways to promote me for that.

3-5 year olds are great audiences. what you wanna do now is... as many shows as possible and more.
You want to feel all ages and try to perform in as many different places (indoors, outdoors, on boats, beach front, roof tops, camps, hotels, kindergardens, schools, classrooms, private homes, banquet halls and the list goes on) in order to get experience). I strongly suggest a hundred hours minimum marketing studies if you don't already have them under your belt. This will certainly assist you and your creative mind to come up with ways to sell your show more and make more money. Don't think about it too much - "just do it" enjoy, Dani |

Any advice on marketing my show greatly appreciated. Also how many shows do people have prepared? for ex., under 5, 5-9, young school, older school, etc.

The hardest thing to do in any long journey is taking that first step. You certainly have done that and you are in control of your own success. Way to go.

Thank you. It was only a matter of time before I done a whole show but when I got up there and done my stuff it was amazing. Just to see the little kids faces light up was the best feeling in the world. Now all I want to do is do it all again, look into school shows etc. Thanks to everyone...

I can feel a big post coming on................
I advertise in one place at the moment, which is on a party page in a local paper. I am lucky to be the only magician listed on the page. Some local party buisnesses (spelling) got together, approached the paper with the idea of the party page and hey presto, I was there since the conception therefore no other magicians..... This has been good coz although I maybe making it seem like I am an old pro I only had my fist "real" kids gig 5 days ago. Its was great, I was so pleased and chuffed.... but the next day I had two gigs, in fact I have 6 over the next 7 days, plus more booked for the futur, but I also realise that this is a busy time and I can't count my chickens etc.. So my plan is, to make up 5000 flyers/adverts or so. Get them done nice and proper, (but not to proper, I will explain later) and I plan to hand deliver these around three local estates were there are lots of families. By delivering them myself I can save some cash and maybe meet any would be clients myself should someone open the door to talk. These flyers will state that by using them they get a one time only deal for a party for (insert price here) that will be for an hour with magic, a game or two, some prizes and balloons at the end. I will put 2 of them on a A4 sheet, then get them printed then cut em at home. The reason why I do not want them too good is that I don't want people to pick it up, take a glance, and think that they can't afford it therefore throwing the thing into the bin. The leafleting idea is not mine, a friend who has worked in sales for years recommended this too me, he also happens to be a very good magician who works a hell of a lot. there we go. |
