I think Doc's idea of everyone being a participant, even people who are just watching (spectators) can be developed into a theory of how you approach magic. Nothing wrong with thinking of everyone as a participant. Especially in bizarre magic, I'd think that you are trying to create a kind of world/atmosphere that really only occurs in the specs minds. They have to actively imagining what is going on and what you are attempting to portray for it to work.
Spectators who aren't participating (by not paying attention or not following the story/plot) will not "get" the effect, will not be "taken on a magical journey" or even into a different headspace and will probably think you're a geek, or even worse, that your magic sucks I want to learn more of bizarre magic, so I came back. Nice website D Byrd. And please, PLEEAASSEE... NOT muggles! Participants sounds good too, even if they aren't holding things.

I agree with the spirit of the word, "participant", but could we shorten it somehow to flow off the tongue as well as the keyboard, more elegantly ?
That's a handful to type everytime. "Part" is too vague though, and could be easily misconstrued as something else. Prtpnt ? Prtcpnt ? PP ? ... I don't like any of 'em. Hey, here's a new idea - an acronym based on several of the most common terms: Spectator, Audience, Participant: or, SAP :baby: As in, have the sap hold the deck lightly between his hands .. lol - the shame of it is, I'd actually like that if it weren't derogatory. Maybe if written with a nudge and a smile.. I'll bet Penn & Teller could get away with it !

It depends on the kind of work you're doing. For bizarre magic, the subject here, I really like participant , or for seance effects, sitter, or for readings, client or subject.
For pumping up the help when we are operating the Gypsy Fortune Teller booth, I prefer the traditional term gaji, meaning the non-Roma who are to have the heavy burden of their excess money lessened. Once we start operating, we are nice, but for building morale during set-up and tear-down, they are all gaji. Yours, Paul |

Subject and client !!! How could I forget them ??
I would gravitate towards subject, myself. Thanks, you two. I think I may have just found my "winner". I knew there was another commonly acceptable term out there. It's short, sweet, and apropos. gaji ... heh I wonder if that's where the phrase, "to gouge someone" comes from, in a financial context ? I may not be spelling that correctly either.
