I don't normally do mentalism, but I intend on doing a little for a Christmas show in school, just a small show to raise money for charity. About 15 - 20 people.
I am not sure what a suitable opening routine would be for mentalism, for my magic shows I normally start with something quick, easy to follow and strong! I'm not sure how this works with mentalism, can anyone recommend a farley strong opening effect for a small show. I have suitable presentations worked out for the rest of my material but I don't know where to start with a mentalism opener, if you can recommend anything from: Marc Paul's - Mind 2 Mind, Jay Sankey - 22 blows to the head or Max Maven - Prism, I would greatly appreciate it. Half my show will be magic the other half mentalism! Mike |

Bank nite - the original. excellent routine.
If not that then some kind of psychological forcing - Bob Cassidy had some good openers. |

Another vote for Bank night - it should be fun, light, quick and direct. Check out Richard Osterlind's handling on Mind Mysteries vol. 1.
I also particularly enjoy the opening routine from James Biss' Messing with minds - it is fast, direct and has plenty of audience involvement. Si |

You need something quick and where spectators can remain in their seats. Tossed Out Deck fits this perfectly.

I disagree that an opener needs to be quick. It SHOULD definitely be entertaining from the word go but it's not a necessity to get a climax in the first minute. My first climax(!) doesn't occur until about 6 minutes after I step onto stage, but everyone is fully entertained during that period, which is what matters most.

For opening I suggest you get your crowd convinved you are able to shock them with mentalism performance, and I think Bank Night doesn't quite fill the work, I love this routine but it is more entertaining than shocking. Try to make use of a NW to open your show (use your imagination and get what I'm trying to tell you). With the adecuate presentation they will be shocked of your mind reading abilities.
After that, skies are the limits. Good Luck, Doron.

Whatever you select, in my opinion, it should set the tone for your show - as to comedy, drama. or something in between - and be sort of a preview for coming attractions.
I prefer something that can be described as a "warm-up" - something you claim will get your ESP juices flowing. It doesn't have to be a real knock-out, just something to demonstrate your abilities. Subsequent effects should be apparently more difficult as the show progresses. At this point, your major goal is to have the audience want you to show them more. If you start out by predicting a headline, for example, it's a little anti-climactic to follow that with predicting a chosen playing card. Something with a little pumping, for example, like Maven's Tossed Out Tech, would fit the bill. It's an incredibly powerful routine but it gives the impression that you really have to exert a little effort to read their minds. Flora Riggs is a great opener and has the added benefit of you giving a gift (a rose) to an audience member. It's a baffling effect and sets you up as a likable person. Technically, it may be too strong for an opener but the other features outweigh that quibbling point. There are ways of altering the effect to make it more appropriate. |

Banachek has an opener in Subtleties that reminds me of "Inside the Fold..." You launch a paper airplane into the audience. The spec that catches it is your first volunteer, and you ask them what number they would assign this aircraft (like 747 etc). Then you show that the number they picked was written on the plane! I don't see why this number couldn't be inside a fold...

I have simplified my show down to 4 effects, this should last about 15 - 20 minutes. I will start by doing ''Mind Magic'', then another performer will come on after me doing ''magic tricks''!
Here's what I have came up with: Max Mavens - Disposable color Marc Paul's - Book Test Jay Sankeys - Memory Lapse Jay Sankeys - Divided Attention If you are familiar with these effects, please give some constructive criticism. Mike |

It needs to be quick, to the point, ultra clean, no possible explanation for it, funny if possible, but certainly entertaining.
Here are my top three: In order of preference: Banachek - ESP card opener Osterlind - Card Calling (Break-through card system) Tommy Wonder - Elizabeth IV The Wonder is the hardest - but not by a long stretch. The co-ordination of movement needs working on. |

I start mine with my version of bank night. It lets them know what kind of person you are, it is light and involves the entire audience if you have them giving advice to stay or switch envelopes. Its a can't miss.

I use Si stubbins and Cassidy's original Chronologue as an opener.
It's not "fast" but effective in setting the tone for the rest of the opener. I would suggest that the opener you do should reflect what kind of persona you are looking to project. I've done both effects on a 20-20 charity gig with the Coventry Magic circle several times and it plays just as well for the younger set as well as for an adult audience. |
