Hey guys,
I have decided to cut the doves from my act and replace them with budgies. I just realised that doves wernt for me. What I am looking for is all the books and videos and dvds on budgie/parakeet magic. I want to get all the info I can before they go into my act. I am already working on a few productions, but want more sources. If anyone would like to help me here with a little list I would truely appreciate it. Thank you all so much, DJ |

DJ Trix,
Contact Bob Sanders here on The Magic Café. He will tell you a lot about the good and the BAD on using parakeets. He use to breed them for selling purposes. They can be used, but from my experience a Dove is a lot Easier to work with. James Adamson http://www.seam2006.com
Be remembered for performing what looks like MAGIC, not skill.

DJ,
As James pointed out we raised budgies commercially for Hartz Mountain back in the 70s and 80s. I had thousands to pick from. They are cute, colorful and active. Given the opportunity again, I would rather work blindfolded with eight-foot rattlesnakes. They are more predictable! No thanks! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

HAHAHAHA,
O Lord! Well me and my manager are working on many things within my act. I talked with him and he gave me some posibilities. The things that we spoke of are so facinating I could in no way go back to doves. I love the idea of these little guys and I think they are perfect for what I am trying to sell (my character). I know it will be hard, but hey, look at joseph gebrial (dont know the spelling). He has proved it can be done, I am willing to take the time... Thanks guys, DJ Posted: Dec 16, 2005 2:51am Bob do you know any breeders in the Las Vegas area? I live in Vegas now. Thanks again, DJ |

DJ,
They are desert birds. It should not be that hard to find a breeder there. There is a magazine called American Cage Bird that has a classified ad section. Some pet shops take the magazine. Check it out. Even small breeders have hundreds of them. That selection could be important for color matches etc. You will need three or four backups too if you are on the road. They don't get sick. They simply die. Actually my key advice in working with these birds is to keep them in a container at ALL times on or near stage. Cages, boxes, etc. are excellent ways to display them without turning them loose in a strange place. (Joseph's show stays put at the same location. That matters with these guys. On the road you will find that they are not very hardy travelers either. I would not recommend them on the road at all. If you work in the same theater every show forever, the biggest problem is noise and keeping them from "exploring".) An interesting training note is that they can be trained to report to a concentrated light spot (laser pointer or jeweler's light). Thus, they can pick the right card, balloon, cup, etc. But a chicken or pigeon does it even better. Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Ok so anyways,
does anybody have any books or videos on workinh with budgies? I am looking for more information about productions and vanishes. The only one I have found is a video from stevens magic. Any help on books, gimmicks for productions (holders), or video/dvd. I am looking to buy up all the info I can, so if you guys can help with a place to purchase these items I would truely appreciate it, or even just names of the books/videos etc... Thanks, DJ |

Try Parakeet Magic. It's a cheap little book that'll give you all sorts of production/vanish ideas. I think it's still available at some dealers or check eBay. I've seen it there occassionally.
You may want to check out Tony Marks Aristocrat of Deception. While he's not a bird act, you may find the concept of working out of a box instead of a table may work out a little better. |

DJ,
I don't know anyone in the Vegas area that raises budgies but I'll bet the people at feed store know. Ask them! It has been a while but when Tannen's sold they still had some blue fake rubber budgies. You may have a use for them. It's worth a call. (Zombie bird!) Good Luck! Bob Magic By Sander |
