Dick Oslund pretty much says it all. I started with a tin beach bucket, then for years used the bottom part of an old rabbit production pail with half crowns. The bottom fell out one day in Covent Garden so it was sadly laid to rest in a convenient bin. Fortunately one of the little shops sold quality cookware at exorbitant prices, and I picked up a stainless steel Couzon champagne bucket. Amazing sound, loud with a good ring, it's been used in pretty much every show I've done since.
After it's first show I removed the ring handles, leaving the mounts in place. Kids where claiming I just shook the bucket, always listen to kids....they teach everything. The ring handles did clink against the bucket. Shortly afterwards I changed coins from English half crowns to Eisenhower dollars. I also cut down on the number of coins I used. Round about this time Pat Page was kind enough to have a few chats with me about the Miser's Dream, and life in general. I kept bumping into him at Alan Alan's shop, he must have thought I was stalking him So now I use as many kids as possible, Couzon bucket, and nine Eisenhower dollars. It's the one staple in my magic performance and I never tire of it. |

I've had a bell bucket well over 20 years, although I never use it. I'm not comfortable with the weight of it. while the outside of it looks perfect, but the inside tarnished, due, I guess, to the salt water air. Still sounds great, but the BB&B bucket is more comfortable for me even though the sound isn't nearly as good.
I bought the bell bucket soon after I read Charlie Miller's description of his MD in Genii. |

jc::: All three of you have "discovered" the real "secret" (It's a money trick, not a bucket trick! We need the pail for the auditory illusion. Any pail that fits your character and has a good clunk will do.) The IKE $ make a good "clunk" in almost anything! I agree, the Bell Bucket is heavy. Jay brought out a lighter aluminum version in the '70s. I tried it, but the outside soon got scratched, bruised, ETC. I even covered it with a wood grain contact paper, but after a few months, I sold it. After the first few months (in 1946) I quit using the "Green River Whiskey" coins. I figured that if even one coin dropped on the floor and kids saw it, the effect was dead! At first I used American half dollars, when the IKES were issued, I switched immediately. I only use five coins! (rehash on the 'shake') Bodgit>>>The main reason (other than the weight of the Bell Bucket)that I use the pail that I have (it's about 6" high, and 5" in diameter)is that it fits in my prop case better! (a good "clunk, too.) If your champagne bucket serves your needs, that's all you need! I agree with removing the outside rings. The simpler the receptacle is, the better. Pat Page had the "sneakiest" cop for the first load (if I remember, he used about a dozen coins)that I've ever seen! If it's of interest, "lemme know". and, I'll PM you. (That goes for jc and jakeg, too. I don't tip it to everyone. (Remember Pat worked in "the kilt".) Pat was one of the nicest guys "to bump into" that I've known in the business. jakeg >>>>My Bell Bucket soon tarnished (inside) too. But, the only guy that really saw the inside was me! I only remember seeing Charlie do MD on one occasion, in the early "80s. He was working a Canadian TV (Alberta)for the Magic Palace TV show. (I can't remember the magician's name--I mean the guy who "owned" the show.) Charlie wouldn't carry any kind of pail (even the C.M Bell) He used a PLASTIC pail on that TV show, borrowed on location, & similar to your BB&B!!! It didn't "ring", but the spec's. could hear the coins land. Back in the '70s, I visited with FAUCETT ROSS in St. Joseph, MO. Faucett had KNOWN T.NELSON DOWNS. Downs vis Ross, verified my own thinking: The entertainment is NOT in producing coins from the air. The ent. is in "finding" coins in the kids' ears, etc.! Best wishes....... Thanks Dick, sending you a PM. My "Couzon" is 8" tall with a 7" diameter mouth, tapering to a 5.5" base. It is heavy, but has great sound and enables me to do a "lazy man's street show".
When I didn't feel like doing the big shows, giraffe unicycle or slack rope rig with fire etc, I went out with five juggling bean bags in the bucket and Eisenhowers in pocket. Pull a crowd by holding five balls and dropping one when a family walked close. So long as I could get a child to pick up and return it I was made. By the time I had finished explaining how brilliant I was, and the difficulty of the tricks they would see, all the time dropping balls as they were returned to me, I had my crowd. Three ball comedy routine, miser's dream coins from the crowd etc and child assistant, finish with five balls and hat. Flexible and fun, just wish my back would let me perform it more often now |

I'm not sure the maker of my bell bottom bucket. Its large. Its loud. Its pretty. And Its not tarnished. I kinda wish it was tarnished. And smaller. And not quite so pretty. It would probably fit my character a bit better. that's why I usually use my cheap bucket. And it fits in my case.

What many pros use is available from restaurant supply and is for mayonnaise, in a professional kitchen. Sounds great. Gregg Webb

I've seen kids holding their ears when I do my coin pail routine.
I use an aluminium pail which is very light and make a nice sound too. 14 Ike Dollars or 14 Chinese Morgans or 14 Casino Dollar Coins. I did my routine for the same way for years till I got Robert Baxt's "Boy and a Bucket" DVD. Great ideas. Also have a Bell Bucket (from Tannens). It's so heavy but does make a nice sound. This is one of the highlights of my show.

THANK YOU JOHNATHAN NEAL BROWN!
I met Dale Harney in the Hubert Castle Circus in the mid '70s in Minot, ND. I had pulled my motor home into the backyard, and noticed a ZIG ZAG just inside the back door. Turned out he was working ALL THREE RINGS with three different illusions (plus several big props). We spent a very pleasant weekend. (It was a Shrine Show, there for several days.) Our paths never crossed again, but I did catch Charlie Miller on Dale's TV show, when I was managing a phone room in Great Falls,(Montana) for Kramien several years later. Every 'now and then' my ancient brain refuses to put a 'name' up on the screen! Thanks for helping out! PS: I still remember your delightful instantaneous visible vanish of a silk from a transparent plastic cylinder (Johnny Carson show, I believe)about 30+ years ago. I had the necessary "motivation", and enjoyed playing--privately--with the effect. (Wish that I had thought of it!!!) But, ethics are ethics! I never used it in a show. Dale

For those of you who own Jay Marshall's Magic Inc. "Bell Bucket," can you please tell me if the outside of the bucket is brushed stainless steel or chromed steel?
Thanks |
