I've seen many posts that mention the book "Body Magic" by John Fisher. I looked it up and even the used copies are $150! Can anyone that has this book give me an idea of the quality of the material (is it worth $150?)? Can you mention specific effects that make it worth this price? Thanks

I think the price is so high because it is a collectors item.

If you get a new workable piece of knowledge from the book and use it to great success on TV, on stage, or whatever your medium then the answer is clear. Value is a subjective term.

Look in your local library. That is where I originally located it - and it is still there.
Many of the contents are 'party tricks' you might have known of 50+ years ago. If you have expressed an interest in any of the 'novelty' type of items pertaining to the human body (Imagining a hole in the hand, lack of 3D vision with one eye closed, seeing stars when the eyes are rubbed, etc.), then you are likely to know many of the other 'illusions' presented. Just don't expect TOO much otherwise you are likely to be disappointed. I have seen the paperback version on EBay for less than $50. |

Body magic is a fun little book, but there's nothing much in it that is earth shattering.

When I was younger I lost (err, ~cough~ kept ~cough~ ) my library's copy, and they only charged me $19.99....
;-) (not advocating stealing from your library -- I was young and stupid....~

Well, Brumal Lagomorph, you didn't steal from the library (just an institution), you stole from all the other people who wished to read it, from your fellow citizens. Many's the time I've been excited to see an item in the library catalog (Ormond McGill's "Stage Hypnotism" comes to mind), requested it, only to find out that it's missing/ stolen / lost. When I ask if the library will replace it, they say since it's out of print, so it's gone forever... from the local public's reach, unless they pay for it.
I hope you still have the book, and I hope you'll give it back. Or buy a copy on the market and donate it back to your fellow public. T-Ray, I read this a few months ago and while it is a wonderful collection, found several of the effects to be ones that are taught elsewhere, sometimes with an even better routine context (abnormal lift, eg). It would definitely be worth $50-$60 to me, but I don't know about $150. I'm going to recommend to my local library that they put it into the reference section to preserve it. And does your library have an "interlibrary loan" service?

Yes -- but some times, there are items, such as many magic books, that I personally would rather have the public not see....

Maybe, but that's not your or my decision.

Brian never once in your life have you "lost" a book and not replaced it? Not from school, library etc? I lost Curious George, but I think everybody has survived.
