You can use Invisible markers, they are used by tailors to mark seams, the ink disappears over a period of time (it is meant to disapear when ironed I think) I have experimented with designs using two pens (one disapearing ink)
For instance a seemingly abstract design could transform to reveal a hidden word or image. I have had some trouble satisfactorily finding a shade of ink to match the invisible ink though. Corona |

If this is to be a stage effect, you can get light red writing to vanish under red light and to turn black under blue light. Dimmers help you transition between the two. The moving footprints are another story and for that you need to visit The Magic Nook Forum, if interested.

The lighting idea is pretty cool.

You can learn more about using colored light to conceal or reveal something. Google on "Samoiloff Effect" for more information. It is a well-known theatrical technique for special effects.
Along that same line might be to write with a material that will glow only under black light. (Not glow in the dark stuff which will glow faintly in ordinary light.)

A couple years ago I was working with phosphorescent chemicals (got a few chemical burns) to make sponge balls that glow under black lights for night club strolling. One discarded method was laundry detergents. The ones designed for whites contain phoshorescenct particles. Gave up on that because my fingers ended up glowing as well. And I realized that some of the super bright goshman sponges already luminesced under UV lights. Sorry. Just remembered my workings with it and I had to share that lame little story with someone. Anyhow, try a fairly diluted water solution of laundry detergent. I'm sure it would work beautifully. Sincerely, Wayne Stevenson The SpookClub |

Yes, the ashes on arm thing will work on paper but you have to write it with some thing else that wont work on your arm. I do this on a ouija board to reveal a word, the burnt offering tips by itself onto the board and as Im cleaning up the ashes, a word appears. Feel free to PM me.

We used to do a trick with a message just using a pencil eraser to write the message On paper, and ashes to do the reveal. Like me, crude and simple... On another note, I will be playing with light stick chemicals

They sell a pen now at some of the magic dealers that writes invisible and has a ulraviolet light in the other end to make it show up. You could draw the map with the pen, disquise the pen as a wand of some sort and creat the light at the wand tip to read the map ala Harry Potter in the halls of Hogswart.

Heck, you don't need a magic shop for that !
I picked up a pen exactly like that for around $2.99 from my neighborhood convenience store. (called Cumberland Farms in this here area) You can also find them at gift or novelty shops. Or use google: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q......e+Search Here's the same one I got: http://www.soslightbulbs.com/1305-p-95234.html for $3.50 They also sell just the ink, under Blacklight / Novelties (Ellusionist's Scorpion, just a little overpriced .. lol )
