Greetings,
I watched Jeff McBride perform his Miser Dream routine, I thought it was fasinating, he inspired me. I got to perform that in my show, but I am having problems. I can't find a decent, metal, ungaffed, but in-expensive coin pail/bucket. I searched on google and nothing really good came up. I do not want a gaffed pail, I think it adds a lot to the effect. Magic Pro shop sells one, but the shape is a little awkward, I don't know if that would work. McBride has a cylinder looking bucket, but I don't need to copy him, and then again I should use something I'm comfortable with. Also, I need good coins to work with. I think I should use about a dozen coins. I want large, reflective, and I think silver coins. I thought about half dollars, but I think something a little bit larger, and mabey more exotic, or rarer coins would be cool. After all, the routine is about unlimited riches, money from thin air. I looked at silver dollars, but they are kinda hard to get, and depending where you get them, they are expensive. And also, if you get silver dollars, usually they sell them as collector's items, not as props that will be used and handled constantly. I looked at palming coins, and the better ones are a little pricey. So, as you can see, I need some help. Could you guys give me on some advice on a pail and some coins? That would be great. Thanks-DP

You can use a coffee can if you wish... however check out restaurant supply shops they have plain stainless steel buckets (like the great Bell Bucket that Magic Inc. used to sell -- you might check them to see if they still have any). That's what McBride and Flosso used (and Charlie Miller).
You can go to a bank and get IKE Silver dollars, or you can go to http://www.nnmagic.com and buy his palming coins... also coin shops sell "junk" silver dollars that are smoother than nice new ones, lots less $$$ and work better.

Nice pail available at Walmart in the cooking section. Ikes are getting harder to find in banks. Coin shops charge about $1.50 for one in circulated condition. If you get deeper into manipulation, you may want to soften them up. Don't mind doing this to an IKE, a Morgan or Peace is a different matter.

Bed Bath and Beyond has a nice selection solid metal wastebaskets. They have one in brass that is the exact one that Petrick uses as the base for his brilliant, mechanical, Misers Dream set-up. They also have a nice selection of metal containers that are used in bathrooms as toothbrush and toothpaste holders.
I bought a stainless steal cotton ball holder at BB&B that is perfect for a close up Misers Dream bucket (hey isn’t that what Bob Solari sells with his version? Why yes it is!). You can also go to a restaurant supply store and get various sizes and depth stainless steel inserts that work great as a Misers Dream bucket. Check out your local gift shops for the unusual bucket looking prop to use. Yard/garage/boot sales and flea markets will offer any number of receptacles suitable for use. I found a very heavy polished aluminum milk-shake cup (that metal thing that goes under the blades to make a milk shake) that rings like a bell and makes a great Misers Dream Bucket! It is difficult to believe that one cannot find a suitable container with just a little effort!

Try a wine bucket/holder/pail at a wine shop. They have different sizes and shapes. To me investing in palming coins is well worth it. But you might want to try some small disc at Home Depot.

Ebay often has 'Chinese Silver' coins, not money, that really have very little silver in them but they are cheap. The shipping kills you though. I bought 18 for $1 but paid $20 shipping and handling.
I was hoping that they had a higher silver content but they don't shine up anything like silver. They aren't quite as bad as German Silver which is almost all nickle. Well, they DID come from China. Chinese stamp and postmark, and they are fairly heavy. That's what I use for my Miser's Dream. |

I'd recommend either Bed, Bath & Beyond or Pier 1 Imports. That where I got mine. They have a nice selection of stainless steel champaigne buckets or even wastebaskets that would work well for this effect.

I found at WalMart tin buckets made in India. I painted it black using spray paint, it make quite a loud sound and cost only a few bucks.
Good luck
