Can anyone tell me anything about Gilbertino's Master Silk Tube? Is it basically a mirror tube, or does it work on a different principal?
I can't find a picture of it anywhere. I found a sketch, but no pic. One site listed it as 13" tall, but gave no diameter. I was wondering what kind of load it will handle. I would like something to do a blendo-type effect, and this sounds good, but I can't find a listing for how many and/or what size silks it can exchange. I would like to do a blendo with a 36" silk, if possible. I will certainly appreciate any help you may have to offer. Perhaps someone could recommend something better that would fill the needs for my application. Thanks! Regan

Hi, Regan! It's not a mirror tube. It works on a different principle (purely mechanical). I have it in a box with some other apparatus that I don't use regularly. I will see if I can dig it up. My Tannen's catalog offers the following description: "It is basically a 13'long, 2-3/8" diameter clear plastic straight-sided tube with two impressive approximately 1-3/4" black and silver caps that fit onto each end of the tube... what does this great piece of apparatus permit you to do? Silk vanishes! Silk appearances! Silk changes! 20th Century! Blendo! And the leopard silk effect!"
So I am sure you are asking yourself, "Why does he have it stored away?" I have used it on occasion and will be keeping it. It is a lovely looking piece of magical apparatus. You may have noticed that most descriptions tell you to cover the tube with paper. And there's obviously a reason for that. You could cover it with a silk if you so desired. In terms of doing a blendo, I really would have to dig it up to tell you if you could use it to produce a 36" silk. Even if you could, you would have to take care of what size single silks you use for the blendo effect. This tube does have limitations but unlike the mirror tube it can be viewed from all angles before and after the production/vanish/transformation. In terms of making other suggestions for a blendo, it really depends on how much presentation and flash you want. There are some flash blendo effects that use single silks (knotted or unknotted) that become the final, bigger silk. Or those that use a bag in which individual silks are placed and then it all becomes the blendo silk. Or using apparatus (e.g., Japanese Hank Box, Pavel change tube, Lewis Cone, silk caddy, massal tube, Niffon Tube, cocktail shaker, newspaper). The us eof a p**l for single silks and a st**l of larger silk. The possibilities are endless. Happy New Year! Jimmy

Wow, thanks Jimmy! It does sound good. I was hoping I could find a pic, but it's all sketches.
Since it's not a mirror tube, I am afraid the 36" silk would be too large. I might could go with a 24", but I don't know for sure. How about handling, can you do a bleno easy and quick with it? Happy New Year to you too! Regan

The Gilbertino tube is kind of a transparent Crystal Silk Cylinder. I think Warren Stephens also did some variations on it in Rice Volume 4.

Hi Regan:
I recently purchased the Casket of Pandora from Stevens and was very impressed with the quality; I've bought many Abbott's items in the past, and the quality has been uneven, but this one they got right. It's top quality and will easily change single silks into a 36 inch blendo. One nice thing about it is you can do it anywhere - no angles to worry about! Ron |

Thanks guys. You have about convinced me that this would be the way for me to go. So, unless I come up with something better, I may go with the Casket of Pandora.

Regan,
I don't know but I have seen them made in Red or blue glitter material. I don't know what your color scheme is for the act but it might matter to you. Richard

Thanks Richard.
The one on Steven's website is blue in the photos. Is this one made by Abbott's? When I get ready to order one, I may see if I can get Abbott's to do one in custom colors. Regan

Yes, that is made by Abbotts. I think it was just a change in material. The one was red with gold accent and the other blue with silver accent. Greg might have both colors. Otherwise, you can always look for used one.

Richard,
I ran across a picture of a used one this morning, and it was the red sparkle color. I don't know if they have changed the style, or if they are available both ways. I'll check with Greg before I order. I would preferably rather have a color other than red or blue. Regan

I was just at Ron Allesi's site, and he's got three Caskets of Pandoras - they all look like previous/vintage styles. I bought mine from Stevens, and had the choice of red or blue. Here's Ron's site: http://ronallesimagic.com Just do a search under "Pandora" and they'll all come up; I especially like the dark blue one. Ron |

Thank you Ron.
I wonder if these are all made by Abbott's? Thanks for the link....and I liked that little wizard dude too! Regan

Ron, the blue does look nice. On one of the older, gold ones, it sataes that the ones being made currently are "not cool". Has the quality went downhill on these in recent years?

Yes, these are made by Abbott's. The quaity has improved from the original that was made from scratch. Formed glitter plastic and hand glued. Now made from plexi tubing and formed caps from plyable plastic type material.
Abbott's make them in other colors according to the glitter foil covering available. Just email Greg Bordner at Abbott's the Owner and he will help you with what colors are currently available. I have both the old and new model and it was the only solution I could find after 3 years of searching for a transposition effect. I highly recommend this piece of equipment. |

Bill's comment is right on> the early Abbott Casket of Pandora is almost "flimsy" compared to the newer version.
For the relatively small dollar difference between an early used model and the sturdy new one, I'd suggest opting for the new one. |

Thanks Bill and Julie.
I definitely want one of these. The comment made on the Ron Allesi website has me a little confused. It sounded as if he was saying the new ones were not as good as the old ones. He had some older models and a newer model for sale, so saying that for a sales pitch didn't really make sense. Bill, how old is your 'new' model? Regan

I just ran across an item called "Fortuna" made by Magic Hands. This seems similar to Gilbertino's Master Silk Tube, except it is an opaque tube rather than clear. The description I have states that it can do productions, but it doesn't mention vanishes or switches, so it may not be like the Gilbertino tube.
I only found a description and a sketch, but I was wondering if anyone has experience with this prop. If so, what is the load capacity? Regan
