Max Maven, beyond having a comment addressing some of the controversy elsewhere in the "Café" was briefly interviewed about the book in the 1/06 "Magic" Magazine.
It is a small but illuminating Q & A done before the book was shipped. (To my mentalist colleagues....not that kind of Q & A.....) In it he mentions that because there was a "waiting list" for the book, unhappy purchasers could return the book to the publishers for a full refund! Bennett |

Can I return it for USD$150? cos that's what it is going for on a very popular auction site

Wait till copies are made, just like the knock-off color booklets. They were selling for $150 for a set. Now tough to give away.

ClouDsss & Kevin:
As a fan of both EBAY (just got my 400th postive feedback) and Max Maven I've been following closely the prices of "Protocols" on ebay and more particularly the predictions on this board of said prices. There were in fact predictions in the Café that buyers would be selling their "Protocols" on ebay for LESS than what we paid. These predictions were wrong. There were a bunch of "Protocols" sales on EBAY at $150 give or take $20 or $30 then the market dried up. Now there at least 2 that will go for at least $150. My prediction: (let me open up the "Glass Box"...there we go...) The current bunch on EBAY will go for over $200. This will cause some more people to list theirs and there will be a bit of a frenzy and "flipping" over the next few months and the prices will hit $300-$400 per. Kevin, the color series prices were holding up despite the knockoffs etc. It was only the publication of "PRISM" that led to the price drop. Bennett |

Given the secrecy of the marketing and not everyone who visits hermetic press comes to Magic Café, this book would definitely sell at high prices, just like cards as weapons once sold at close to 700 per book.
I knew I shld have ordered the whole load and make a handsome profit. duh!! So, when is Max releasing another book like this and Minch giving another secretive marketing advertisement? I just cant wait

Bennett,
No question the color series were holding up in price, that's why the knock-offs magically appeared. Same thing with my field, Houdini autographs. Once an item gets to certain price level, things happen. It happened to the Harbin book. On a closer note, I was thinking of writing a book called "Proctologist To The Elders Of Magic". It may have a new angle to look at magic from. Instead of magic being dead we may just find a lot of crap? Best Always, Kevin

Kevin:
I had the same thoughts you did about how "Protocols" is ripe for parody. I even mentioned it to the guy who spearheaded the excellent "PRISN" series which is a brilliant take on the "PRISM" and the "Color Series." (http://www.francismenotti.com/magicians/portal.html) What I was seriously thinking of doing was starting a list of quotes, grouped annually, of really dumb, unintentionally funny, racist, sexist, or homophobic things found in the magic literature. Dealer ads included. If I only had the time for this noble pursuit. Perhaps in 10 years. Bennett |

But its actually quite hard to pirate a book isn't it? I mean the cover, the color, the binding, etc. So I think it wouldnt be that easy to make copies of Protocols

You could probably knock them out for $20 a pop or less. Dump them at $100 per, slowly. I'm not recommending it or condoning it. The Harbin book was harder to do, but the return was much higher. If there is money to be made, some weasel will think of it. Just take a look at Ebay and see.

Thanks for the insight.
How do we actually spot the fake ones? I mean as in what characteristics to look out for? Ebay suddenly became more dangerous to purchase stuff after knowing this but thanks for the advise. At least I will be more cautious
