Question: is there a method for making the tear during the routine (ie, no prep)?

Darwin Ortiz has a very practical solution to this. It's in his book Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table.

I've done the routine with unprepared cards for many years. Roy told me that his original method was similar, but the instructions said to prepare the cards beforehand...

I watched a video of card warp once in which I was sure I saw the performer "prepare" the card on the spot. I'm pretty sure I know how he did it (he flashed a little in the video). But I've always found that I can get by with a card that has been prepared prior. I use a face card (makes sense for inquisition patter), which hides the gimmick pretty well and allows free handling and displaying of the card. I also have the spec hold the other card for me while I do the initial folding. This can cause the spec to think they've actually handled both cards.

Just do it as you demonstrate how they should fold their card. They are too busy following instructions to notice that you just tore the card.

What I worry about is the sound. You have to talk quite abit to cover for the sound, and it's not natural to me to talk that much...
It is, however, possible to prep it on a "toilet" trip, or something, but even so I'd love to be able to do it on the spot...

I bet the same technique used in fork bending could be used. There has to be some way of clamping the card with the fingers to regulate the straightness and depth of the rip. Maybe when borrowing/or having the bill inspected this could be done. The sound wouldn't be as big of a deal if you could do it quickly.
You could also falsely expose a torn and restored card routine, by holding the card close to your mouth and (standing profile), while making fake tearing sounds with your mouth, actualy put in the gaff. Holding the "restored" card with two fingers, explain that you wouldnt try to fool them with such trickery. The proceed to show them some real magic. Just brainstorming. No real world testing.

You can do it anytime..I prefer doing it BEFORE the trick and have the gimmicked card second from the top..then I just deal out the cards in a way that hides the gimmicked section of the card. It looks very natural which is what counts.
I've made the gimmick : under the table. between my legs as I sat in the car. underneath the deck while folding the card even during another trick -as the spectator was counting card ( I think it was at the end of las vegas leaper) |
