I realize that Cerebro probably isn't widely-used but was rather intrigued to find online (www.magicauction.com/Mag_auc/mentalism.htm) what may be a cost-effective (and perhaps even superior?) alternative to it. Here's the info and link:
"COMTEK RECEIVE A CUE" "Allows you to clearly receive info from an off stage assistant. Great for mentalism act. Used for only 5 shows, new condition." It seems that, theoretically at least, one could purchase this less-expensive device (perhaps even a new, fully-warranteed, out-of-the-box one, rather than a used one via the auction site) and use it to perform Cerebro-like effects and save some money.

The systems work on diferent priciples. If you're going to use an ear bud and don't think the audience is woried about transmitters, then maybee this will work for you, but cerebro works using a different technology. Just to clairify, I do not own a cerebro so a can neither vouch for it nor review it.

MentaThought, that's interesting. I read something recently about the Cerebro device, as follows:
"The Cerebro, well, this is nothing more than a few walkie talkies with a modified hearing aid.." If this is a true critique, and I have seen similar opinions, then a less expensive version would be welcomed I'm sure. Rio |

Rio, I don't think that is true but I don't know for sure.

The Cerebro transmits sounds from you to someone else WITHOUT an earpiece.
And no one but the spec hears the sound. |

Exactly, Cerebro was not made with the intention of using it as a covert ear piece, that's more of a bonus. First and foremost it was created to "implant" thoughts, or transmit sounds covertly. Then we thought adding walkie talkies to it would open up a lot of doors, so we did.

Still seems expensive to me for what it is, but that is just my opinion, others will make their own minds up I'm sure.

You don't have to buy it, no one is really asking you to. You could always go out there and try and get all the components and you would realise it's not all that expensive. AND you obviously get a bunch of routines, access to a forum with more routines etc. etc.

Vision, you sound a little defensive, as I said, it's just my opinion.

Not really defensive, its just unfortunate that some people look at the price tag and think "its too expesnive for what it is", without really knowing what you get, what its capable of, and not taking into account the routines you get.
By all means, you have your opinion.

Expensive is only a point of view. It depends on how often you intend to use it. The more you perform the less it costs. But in the end that's a personal decision how much it is worth to you.

Expense is only a concern to the purchasers, whom use it quite frequently and religiously. I happen to know many and they do enjoy it. The possibilities are unbelievable!
Use it once and you'll see why. |

The acoustic technology to transmit audio in a narrow column is a fascinating emerging technology.
I predict that sales kiosks will be using this to skirt noise ordinances and zoning laws, thus able to beam an audio sales pitch to passersby without creating broad-based noise pollution. I do think Cerebro is brilliant use of this. I think it's out of reach for most performers, but that's true of many things. In a pitch black seance environment, a cardboard tube will also convey a whisper to a spectator's ear almost unheard to the others... Outside the Pacific Science Center in Seattle are two parabolic dishes 100 feet apart. A person standing before one dish can hear the whisper of another standing at the other dish. This is a focused beam of sound. Theoretically, such a parabolic system without electronics could achieve the same result. How to make it invisible is another issue.

That would be a great post if that was how the Cerebro worked, if you do a little research (even look at the mentalism plus website) you'll see that it is no secret.

Brian Turntime, I initially thought that was what Cerebro was too. When I found out what it was, I was surprised. It's a very clever idea.
I had thought of using the principle it uses decades ago, but for the performer, not for a participant. Using the principle on a participant is a brilliant idea. (I'm an electrical engineer and an amateur radio operator, and the idea it uses is fairly well known in the communications field). If that idea is practical, and by all accounts I've read, it is totally practical, then in my opinion Cerebro is worth the price just to use the idea, even without getting the hardware. The price does keep Cerebro mostly in the hands of professional performers but that's not a bad thing. There are plenty of great routines left over for the rest of us to do! From the description, it sounds like Comtek is using the idea I had, and not what Cerebro is. Also, the idea I had is not original with me, it has been used previously in a different context than performing, whereas I expect that Cerebro is a totally original idea.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.
