I've seen several posts about the effect Tossed Out Deck, the effect sounds outstanding. Is this a gimmicked deck or something I can learn to do from a book or DVD? What sources would you recommend for learning this effect?

A really great one is being sold at Hocus Pocus under the Hot New Items (yes I'm plugging another stores site and not my own!)
Tossed out deck is so great - highly recommend it! JZ |

Then there's the original, in Hoy's *Bold & Subtle Miracles of Dr Faust*. Remarkably inexpensive, the booklet includes a strong handful of effects and teaches an attitude to create strong mentalism.

I second mavens, still one of the most complete works on tossed out deck I have seen yet. Mind, Myth, and Magick has a good one as well. FOr an alternative try Osterlind's RADAR Deck from Mind MYsteries Volume 1.

I still think that Maven's is the best. He covers the angles and everything. It truly leaves the audience with the impression that you have named each card.
I do not like the idea of calling cards off of a list or producing a jumbo card from my pocket. It is too much like "magic." What is the deal with having somone spread the cards? Or even inspect them? The tossed out deck is a stage or parlor routine and this is so not necessary. We really must stop inventing solutions to problems that do not exist. Get the Maven DVD and you will alos get some other wonderful effects for the money. Osterlind's Radar deck is good for parlor or to work with the first row in a stage setting but it is not the tossed out deck. Great effect and well worth then money however, like most of what Mr. Osterlind produces. This would be a good consideration for a re-booking. In a close up setting you cannot do the tossed out deck-so you you may consider the "Mind Power Deck." All that being said: Maven's is an improved version of the classic, so start with that and the branch out. |

Although not a mentalist, Gazzo offers a strong multiple phase Tossed out Deck in his Lectures. Penguin Magic (yech!) may now offer them.
I have been using it for quite a while now and it fools everyone, even magicians - whom I especially enjoy fooling.

My version mentioned above can be performed close-up as well. The cards can be spread casually without fear, as you remove the jokers for instance. If you have the book (The Black School - with over 50 routines) take a look, it's the last effect on there.

Bruce Berstein has an excellent version in his booklet "Perception is Everything".
Wayne Dobson shares his verion on his recent DVD "Unclamped". I would also recommend looking at Docc Hilford's Cassandra Deck (booklet or DVD). Iain. |
