From studying this topic for the last year here is an ordered list of remote controlled sound devices worthy of purchase based on your finances.
For beginners, check the X10 units. For less than $50 you can have an on/off electric device controller. For example, a single remote controller and transceiver to turn on/off a tape recorder check out the RC6500 Wireless Keychain Remote Control System for $24.99. Small enough to turn on and off a tape recorder. For operating two electrical devices you would need the SlimFIRE Pocket Remote for $19.99 and a Lamp Model and Transceiver (see Ultimate REMOTE Home Control Kit $19.99). So for $40 bucks you can turn on/off a tape recorder and a flash pot or mini laser light. Now for the big cheap spender (humor here) get the:
Now for around $75.00 you can turn on and off four electrial devices such as a tape recorder, two flash pots, and a small laser lighting unit (and have a spare lamp module). Additional receiving units can be purchased for heavy duty devices such as a fog machine, and light bars. There is also a Palm Pad 8-unit controller for 8 devices ($19.99) There is a lot of versatility in these devices. For a look at these units first hand, check out your local Radio Shack which sells some of these units under their name. Now here is how you can use a single unit device to turn your kid's show into a professional type show. Get Richard Wayne's Magician Music Kit Vol. 4, it has a big show and kid show introduction music. On a Tape recorder, tape the Kids show introduction, then tape another modern music piece for about a 2-minute magic routine (establishing magicial abilities), then record the Vanishing Bandana Banana routine, then record a closing number from any of Richard Wayne's Magician Music Kits. That's all there is to it. Turn it on, perform, turn it off. Really a nice touch to a show. (Add pieces of music to suit your needs such as Ken Scott's Instant Magician routine or a Zombie Ball Routine, or a fanfare background music selection as an assistant comes up to the stage.)

Wow! Thanks for the tip! Now, is there any reason why this wouldn't work with a mini-disc?
If a twenty dollar gadget can do the job, why are the "pro" models so expensive? What exactly is the difference between using the Virtual soundman and just using the remote that comes with the MD player? |

This is nothing more than an on/off switches with a small remote control. If the mini disk uses 120 V (or with stepdown AC/DC Adapter) electricity and it does not jump back to the 1st track everytime it is turned on it will work.
The pro models are computer based and offer more such as skipping tracks, pause, and some are computer driven capable to run a whole show operations. They are much more than on/off gadgets.
