...it measures 22.5 inches in circumference... 23.55 inches, actually: http://www.gomath.com/Questions/question.php?question=902 God, I'm such a geek... Anyway, I'd like to see this start as maybe a shell game with a red pea. The pea inexplicably grows to marble sized, making it obvious which shell it's under, since it doesn't fit. The spectator obviously chooses THAT shell. This offers a natural transition to in-the-hand handling, as the marble is picked up and examined by a befuddled performer. The marble then miraculously grows to ping-pong ball sized, thanks to an old-school type p**l, painted red, concealing MegaSpongeBall (MSB), which subsequently and incredibly seems to grow right from your hands. The process is then reversed, with MSB being returned to a red ping pong ball (p**l), and back to a red marble which is made to vanish. Naturally, when the originally selected shell is lifted, there is the red pea. Regards, -jjg |

I do a sort of Matrix routine with sponge balls and my hat. Well, maybe it's not a Matrix. Four sponge balls in a square. Put my hat over one. Pick up another and vanish it. It appears under the hat. Repeat until all four are under the hat. Then put the hat down and vanish each ball, one at a time, tossing them invisibly to the hat each time.
Lift the hat to show a giant sponge ball. I forgot where I got that one. I remember learning the routine somewhere, but I think I added the final load. Posted: Feb 3, 2006 8:07am Steve, I 'expanded' your idea a little. I make a mini leather chop cup. The top is removable. So I used two cups. One I preloaded because I REALLY had to jam that sucker in there. At the end of the routine I topitted one cup and vanished it from my right hand. They were surprised and thought that was the end of the trick. I reproduced it in my left (the rigged cup) and then pushed the ball out by pushing down on the top of the cup. I had to wet the ball first to make it softer and that puppy just kept growing and growing. I put the cup mouth down on the table and the ball on top and the ball just sort of lapped over the top of the cup and covered it. I hadn't anticipated that. It's a nice move, I wouldn't try it in front of someone that wasn't following my misdirections well though. I'm not smooth enough at that switch yet. |

Remember the old routine where at the end of the sponge bunny routine there were like a MILLION baby rabbits.. the load was put in a rubber dam by wetting the little bunnies.. and the loading them into a rubber dam like a dime through dam trick.
When wet.. you could get a whole BUNCH of bunnies in that load space.. then you tied off the rubber dam and just broke it with a fingernail at the end.. you could do that with your giant sponge ball.. wet it.. pack it into a rubber dam..and stretch it to the point of breaking.. and tie it off.. just get the small package into your hand.. break the rubber.. and you can release a slightly damp.. but HUGE spongeball from a VERY small space.. the rubber shrinks to a blip so small that you could probably just drop it and it wouldn't be noticed. Hard do do for an instant reset though |

Hey Whizzomagic, I was just in Louisville this week on business. Had a great lunch at Fat Tony's Pizza - ever been there?
I don't think the 7.5" spongeball that I have is neccesarily unusable. It's just not quite practical for an “in-the-hands” finalé, as I originally envisioned.

Diminishing sponge ball
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWjwoAB9DA8 or with alternate routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awvDOjE_HOE&NR=1 Note: the 7.5" is perfect to split into two 3" balls, etc etc. Use this method.

If you are into comedy, put it in one of your front pockets and walk around and see if anyone notices?

John Mendoza's bowl routine covered the fact that even his large sponge ball load lifted the bowl. I guess it is not too much of a secret...have the specatator hold the bowl down to the table to "prevent you from sneaking anything under it"
Book of John Bowl routine...Great book great routine. |

I had the stanard 1 1/2 inch sponge and then I came across some larger ones which I could use with my big hands they were about 3-4inch. I played with the idea of walking on with a maginyfing glass and showing how a ball looks biger. The switc is simple I also thougth of wit another switch and a even larger ball you could talk about how things close seem bigger
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

L. Ireland published his growing sponge routine in his book. Magic Inc. use to sell the effect separately.
I believe it is in this book: http://www.magicinc.net/irelandwritesabook.aspx Half dollar changes to a sponge and then some sponge work, then the production of a 4" sponge. |
