Interesting that people keep recommending MMM as one of the top choices. I don't know people who perform a piece from it. Although it is great for inspiration and a source of nice ideas. I think that an experienced mentalist might get more from it than a beginner. Also it is very prop oriented so it may be more suitable for magicians or for bizarre presentations.

Hi,
I just pulled my copy of Mind, Myth and Magick off the shelfe this evening and was reminded of just what a bargan this book is. If you can't find something you like in it, you have not read it all! Stan |

Sandman what effects from MMM do you currently use in a show?
As I said before I find it more of an inspirational book than a practical one (many of the effects are pretty much pipe dreams). It is an interesting read but I am not sure I would recommend it before some other books. |

Talking about best books to get, the most fun with the classics is completely frying someone with an effect from a book they have in their own library! Seems like everybody has the classics but only 20% of us read 20% or more of the content and then actually use maybe 20% of that. It's wonderful how you can have such treasures hidden in books you can buy at Border's. Does that ring true?

Another easy one to read is STUNNERS PLUS by Larry Becker. It's full of great material for all tastes.

Although far from a set text, I think every mentalist and magician should read Derren Brown's tomes Pure Effect and Absolute Magic. They really are a sumpremely entertaining read, full of excellent practical ideas too.

I agree with most of the suggestions, but would add the following: get the complete file of the Jinx (rather easy to get) over Practical Mental Effects. The Jinx was written/edited by Annemann, but not the later compendium. His spirit lives on in the black cat's pages.
Also, if you want to fry somebody with a classic text, get Greater Magic. You'll never regret it. Martin |

Punx (Ludwig Hanneman) published some outstanding mental material. I believe there were 4 books all written in German. Three were masterfully translated into English by Bill Palmer and published in Mexico by Craige Snayder.
I have all three, in mint condition, presented to me by the publisher. I have read them several times and highly recommend them for both methodology and presentational thinking. Sid

George Anderson's 'It must be mind reading' is an oldie but goodie. Some great q & a subtleties and other tweaks.

Your favourite non-magic book store is discounting Karl Fulves' SWMM and Annemann's
PMM if bought together. I bought them there and between them they are VERY cheap and VERY comprehensive. And in the UK. |

Anything by Barrie Richardson will only enhance your "mental" knowledge.

noncom,
I would second The Jinx as an excellent source of material. As a side benefit, some of the routines are so old, they are new. The Jinx is my favorite set of books of all time. My copy is so marked up and cross-indexed that it looks like graffiti-city. If you can't afford the three printed volumes, I recommend the new CD-ROM version. The printed volumes are approx $80.00 for the three volume set; the CD-ROM version is $20.00. As an added bonus, the CD-ROM version is "searchable" by key word. What this means is you can type in a word or group of words (such as "book test") and a comprehensive list of all the book test effects in all three volumes is displayed. What could be easier? For my money, I wished they had had the CD-ROM when I first started into magic, then I wouldn't have felt the need to mark up my printed copy. Yes, that means I would have purchased both the books and the CD-ROM. Finally, don't sell Karl Fulves or any self-working "tricks" (I prefer the term "effects") short. Some of the best mentalism and some of the best magic is done with a self-working effect. Presentation is the key. And besides, the audience shouldn't know if you are doing a self-working effect or a "knucklebuster". They are there to be entertained and they mostly don't realize there is such a distinction (distinction between "self-working" and "knuckle-buster"). They do, however, understand the difference between a poor performance and a great and entertaining performance. Just my two cents worth. Turk
