I'm surprised Peter Samelson's Ring and Rope routine, from Theatrical Close-up, hasn't been mentioned. Great routine. I use it all the time in walk-around.

As mentioned in one of the above posts, Aldo Colombini, has two great "Ring and Rope" routines. Aldo Colombini's "Still Ringing" effect is an incredible 8-phase ring & rope routine, and his "Ringing Around Too" is comical, five-phase ring and rope routine.
Aldo has many great rope, sponge ball, and cards tricks that are very easy to do, and they get great reactions from the audiences. If you are ever interested in performing any ring & rope, rope, sponge ball, or card effect, I would first check out any of Aldo Colombini's magic tricks. Any tricks by Aldo would be my first choice.

I started working on a Ring & Rope routine from Scott Guinn this last weekend. It has some very nice moments. I recommend it.

Can it be done with one of those yellow, plastic, Lance Armstrong-type rings?

I use Aldo Colombini's routine, but with a variation. I showed it to him when he was here in Manila, and he seems to approve of it. I was using Still Ringing.
During his lecture, I was surprised that he changed the finale of Ringing Around Too. According to him, he changed it for the simple reason that he wanted a stronger finish. BTW, I use a white, slightly heavy, white bus ring; the one that you hold on to when you're standing up in a bus. |
