Separating the wheat from the chaff? Or better yet (or in conjunction with), play on the symbolism of the colors...red as the blood of Christ and black as sin and talk about our ability, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to remove the sin from our lives.

Incidentally.....
In the recently produced and marketed complete course in card magic that magic makers put out, they have a TREMENDOUS impromptu version of ootw truly genius, and much simpler than the original, imho. have fun with it! |

Also the seed that was sown on hard ground and was eaten by birds, versus the seed that sown on well tilled ground might be a direction to go.

You can work around the theme of creation, when the world was formless and empty,(Gen 1:2) and the Lord separated the light from the darkness (v.4),and the water under the expanse from the water above it (v.7)

I have performed out of this world, but maybe it is not best to use this trick to send a Christian message. To me, it seems the trick is too powerful. Lay audiences my suspect you have some powers. We as Christian magicians want to amuse our audiences and send messages, not lead them to believe that we are something we are not.

Any Christian performer who leaves that "option" (that you have some powers) on the table is doing his/her ministry a disservice. I believe that it is your responsibility to make sure that they do not think that you are "something you are not."
I make sure that folks know that I don't do magic, but I do magic tricks. One of my favorite lines, is that I am going to fool you. And if I am good, I will fool you real good. This always get a chuckle from the specs, and makes it clear that it all a deception of the senses. I am fooling them. There are also numerous publications available on the subject of "Should a Christian do magic?" And I use an abbreviation of that idea on the back of my business card. Here is what it says, (and I paraphrase parts of it during my initial presentation and throughout my performances): "Spells, curses, witchcraft and spirit-talk are clearly forbidden in the Bible. However card tricks and illusions are not forbidden. A Christian who does illusions should make it clear that they are tricking people senses and fooling them with misdirection or other sleight of hand skills. As a Christian magician, I have no special powers. The effects I perform work only because we can easily be deceived by what we think we see. Tricks like these are actually a useful tool to show how easily people can be deceived so that they may be on their guard." Obviously this is in a fairly small type but it fits nicely on the back of a standard business card. I do it in gray ink to soften it, but it is extremely readable. In fact I gave it out at a community rally where I was performing last night at about 9:45 pm and the person turned it over and read it easily (in the dim light) - and what was interesting to me, was that he turned it over and read the back right after he read the front, even though I didn't draw attention to it. So two things happen now when I hand out my card, they get the card that tells them how to contact me, and now they understand (and can clearly pass on to others) what I think about a Christian performing magic. By doing this, many objections or problems that can result from a lack of understanding are addressed before they can even occur. I was concerned that this message would be ignored because it is on the "back". But time after time, people immediately turn it over and read it right after reading the front, or come back later, and say "I showed the back of your card to my [Pastor/friend/whatever] and this really helped them to understand." And although I put it together in a hurry, and will making it clearer and more concise in the future, it works well for now. Now to the comment about not doing strong magic, even the most powerful magic illusion is just that an illusion. And we should not try to limit the impact of our effects. Instead, we should use that impact to reinforce the point or message you intend (or just to amuse) and make a clear demonstration that the spectators can not always believe what they think they see. Gospel Illusion is very powerful and a great source of teaching but one thing I have learned as a Christian Magician and a Pastor is that you can call it magic, illusion, tricks or what have you and there is always some superstitous person who will take offense and say it is not acceptable. I have learned that I must decide if I want to use this powerful teaching tool and take the chance or not.
God bless you guys and gals as you continue your teaching and build upon your God inspired skills.

The more powerful the trick the more they remember the messages. If you have done your disclamer I can not do "REAL MAGIC" they will remember the trick too.

I use a six card oil and water from Levand's It can't be done any slower.
It is a one handed version, using 3 red and 3 cards. The 3 i.e. black cards are doing things that fulfill our purpose, while the red cards i.e. are distractions, instincts run riot/sin..... Of course at times I reverse the colors i.e. red are the purpose full behaviors and..... Be safe and creative. Harris Deutsch Laughologist

I know a sucessful (for ten years or more) magician who returned to his religion in earnest after getting married; the result of this "change" was he disassociated himself from all of his (magic) friends and business contacts AND ceased any connection to Magic at all, returning to his former occupation (no, it wasn't an economic decision--he was a successful full-time pro).
I still don't understand this??? |

It is all very personal. And I commend him for his committment to walk away from it, since he obviously felt strongly (was convicted?) to do it.
I too, upon being Born Again at the age of 46, gave up magic. It wasn't that I thought magic was bad, but I found it taking up a larger part of my life than I thought it should. And I felt that I was doing it for my Glory, and not for God's Glory. So when I realized that, I quit for nearly 10 years. And it was only when a long-time Pastor friend who knew me prior to my quiting magic, asked if I could help a team of young evangelists with a couple of simple magic tricks. I said yes, dug out my old boxes of magic, and started putting proper routines with things. That was over five years ago and I now perform more than I ever did, but to God's Glory first. I think somtimes we have to be willing to give something up. Abraham and Isaac comes to mind too, even though in this case, I wasn't giving up anything nearly as dear as my son. But then we find that it was just an issue of who is put first. Once that question is answered, we don't have to give up anything at all, in fact we gain a great deal more. Not everyone understands the need to set this priority. But to the ones who do, it is crystal clear. BroDavid

I enjoy your thoughts on this subject Brother David. It's obvious that you've thought, and prayed, about this a lot.
One rule that I've always gone by is to ask myself, who is getting the glory here? If I've done the presentation correctly, God clearly is lifted up and He gets the glory. Those in the audience shouldn't be amazed by me, but by Him. To assure that this happens, the message I give must clearly be focused on Him, not me. Thanks again for the insightful thoughts. |

I have ideas
-identifing light and darkness -fixing a misled life by fixing the crooked path -the depths of heaven and hell -separating sinners to the worthy ones -the dark path and the shiny road I hope this helps. I'm a member of Youth For Christ and I never thought of involving magic in the Youth Spiritual Camps I supervise. It's good this forum is here so I could get tips in this new art for me. |

In terms of the above comment that the effect is too strong. If you are doing a bunch of weak effects why even bother doing gospel magic.
I think the problem with gospel magic is that most of the effects are too weak in comparison to the message that is trying to be communicated (word of god). Infact by doing some piddly weak effect, you just trivialize the message and make your entire effort seam meaningless to intelligent audiences. |
