Shouldn't one just be able to borrow your host's deck of cards, or just pull out some halves or use your host's items laying around the house?
What about just totally relying on sleight of hand for impromptu magic? Dai Bato |

Before picking up any gimmick and/or gimmicked deck/coin, it is ESSENTIAL and CRUCIAL to be AT LEAST good with basic sleights (in MY opinion you should be good at misdirection, palming (finger/classic to say the least) and false transfers
but alas, some effects cant be done with no gimmicks!

Right on pkg!
I've always thought that all aspiring magicians should focus on learning impromptu magic right from the start. Impromptu is basically defined as something that is done with "little or no preparation". If the magic you do is percieved by those watching as being impromptu then that's all you need. It don't matter what methods you use because they won't know if done properly. If you're just starting out then you might want to use pure sleight of hand. Nothing wrong there at all and it's a good place to start. The choices are of course yours. |

And btw one of the GREATEST and DEAREST (not to mention one of the most useful) tips I got is from my mentor Gede nibo, CHOP CUPS!! (stop yawning I can hear you all the way over here!) I thought to myself NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not that cheesy thing (well sometimes you like stuff sometimes you don't!) till I forced myself to practice and practice and practice!!! I thought that I KNEW how to perfectly misdirect people! When I got the chop cup, I was devastated (imagine a cheesy 70s music in the background).... but seriously, I boosted my misdirection skills by 500% just by practicing the chop cup!!!
I cant emphasize enough on how much good it will do you! get it, you will thank me for sharing Gede's tip!

Yes pkg, yes!
I can hear "Muskrat Love" by the Captain and Tennille playing in the background. Ta da da Nibbling on bacon, chewin' on cheese la ti da... :coolspot: Cups and balls is a terrific wasy to learn misdirection. Some have said that you not a magician until you learn C&Bs. |

might I add "sleight of tongue"....errors and a trick going bad is ALWAYS (ALWAYS! U CAN BE MOSES, SPREAD UR HANDS AND FOR SOME REASON THE SEA WONT BUDGE!) a possibility...witts (and usualy humor with a back-up trick) solves the issue...
I dunno, I might be wrong, but when planning my routines, I always try to find a back up plan/trick in case something went wrong... and you might find On the Spot by greg wilson to be helpful (well totaly impromptu with nothing but sleight of hand!)

Last June I performed at the high school graduation party for my alma mater. They arrived early at the site, so the kids had to stay on the busses for about twenty minutes; I was asked to keep them entertained (read: quiet) whilst they waited.
As I was doing a coin routine one of the chaperones arrived with forms and pens for a raffle. One of the kids handed me a pen and said, "Here, Mr. Magician, show us something with this." I went through most of Gregory Wilson's Recap and handed the pen back to the student. He yelled, "Wow! You can do magic with ANYTHING!" It don't get better than that. |

I agree...
I always carry a half with me at all times. I have a half silver lady liberty that I use. Love a moments notice when a spectator asks me to show them something and pull off a short show with the item in my pocket...or theres. ..Rubber bands... coins...paper money...pens...cards... Any small object is great for any sleight of hand meathod and makes for shocking impromtu magic that peaple really relate to because they use the same objects all the time. Not like a small prop that you buy and pull out of your pocket and say "o.k....here is this cool magick prop I bought" No...then you can say..."o.k. ..here is some MAGIC.."

When I started magic I was not 5 like most guys.
I was actually a lot older. The only reason I did magic was 2 fold. I needed something to do while in physial therapy, and then when it ended I started working for money. I didn't have lots of money to spend on gimicks concequently. I bought books with lots of tricks, (this is before DVD), I learned slight of hand and before I knew it 95% of what I do is simply regular stuff slight of hand. The other 5% uses gimicks, and still slight of hand, chop cup and the like. And a great ability to misdirect with my mouth, in my case comedy. I think all magicians should learn these basics, but it is only an opinion. If the gimick fails, you can still do lots of things my way. When all you have is gimicks and they go away, it is tough. Plus you can do tricks with practically whatever you want too. Just some thoughts.

As I love card magic, I always look for very strong, direct effects and routines that I could do with a borrowed deck. I only have three effects with gaffed cards, but these are strong enough for me to justify their use. But if I can do an effect with sleight of hand instead of gimmicks, I always go for the no-gaffs version!
