You are correct, Regan. Mourning doves are wild and more suited for outdoors, while the white java doves like magicians use are domesticated and need warmer temps. I always suggest the plastic cage covering in the winter like you mentioned, plus a brooder light located right over a perch where all of my doves can congregate.
As for the cancer issue, anything small that can be inhaled can cause respiratory disease and possibly cancer, but the risk depends on the exposure. Dust from dove feathers and dried dove poop dust will give you histoplasmosis long before they will give you cancer (see link) http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/diseases/histopla.html Just wear a dust mask when you clean your birds and you will be safer from inhaling less dust. I have had it and it is no picnic.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

Hi MorningStar.
Oh, no! Another disease to worry about. Thanks for the link and the info. By the way, I love your name. It is really beautiful. I guess I am a little partial to anything with the word 'Star' because people nicknamed me that in high school. Regan

Hey Regan,
Thanks for the complement. Yes, Histoplasmosis is probably the greatest risk we magicians run regarding birds. Other than the occasional killer dove that attacks without warning and pecks out our eyeballs (not really).

I guess I better get used to wearing sunglasses on stage and take out some 'killer-dove' insurance. Regan
