The Stevens Greater Magic DVD ( originaly on video ) says Johhny Paul was the first bar magician. I thought Al Andrucci ( Heba Haba Al ) was the first. Anyone know for sure?

The first first bar magician ?
He probably comes from the middle ages ! The first modern, big name; Schulien, but it depends on what we class as bar magic . Chuck Sanders, Leo Andrews. But why ? |

I'll have to go back and check my research (and I did a ton of research on bar magic in the day), but I am almost positive that Johnny Paul is credited with starting the genre. The big names that followed were Jim Ryan, Matt Schulien and Eddie Fechter. Heba Haba came a few years later.

My belief is, if you have spent a bit of time "on the boards" then you are a bar magician. Then again, as the Stevens video points out, Matt got away with quite a bit more by sitting at a table due to his "built in servante"

I guess it could be a fine line. I think of bar magic as it's done 90% behind the bar. But,maybe that's splitting hairs.
Does bar magic still have a following in Chicago?

Eddie Fechter was doing magic as a child in his father's saloon in the early to mid 30's!

I was thinking Matt Schullien too.
Schulliens was like a hot spot for chicago bar/dining magic then there was the backroom. Photos adorned the walls. *sigh* I miss that place too. Other than that the Round Table met at the Drake/Mayor's Row and each person a did trick around the table. Matt is in Salla portrait also.

I would have to go with Jesus and the whole "water into wine" thing.
