Need opinions on this.I hope to(one day!!)present a seance show, ending in a spirit cabinet routine. The story involves "ghost" of a girl in a victorian photo. So I'm debating wether to just have a vanish of assistant in cabinet,or substitution for Victorian girl.Bearing mind this is end of night, and if a switch is made, what to do with girl then logic wise.So is a vanish, more shocking?
Opinions? |

If a Victorian assistant appears, it suggests that the spirit cabinet things are being done by an accomplice. The source of the manifestations should be secret. Otherwise, why bother with a spirit tie, being checked periodically, etc.

Spirit cabinets did not involve vanishes... If you have to vanish the girl, bring her back and take a bow... Read about the Davenports...

Harry,
As you are talking about what you want to perform, only you can answer, along with your target audience, if you have done what you set out to accomplish. I am not sure what "rules" you are trying to stretch or change here? If you are doing this as a Seance, I guess I might ask- how are you billing this? If you are telling me, as a paying customer, that I will have a seance experience, I have a given set of expectations, as a result of the historical writings on the topic. I may just decide to look up more before I arrive. Do you want me, as a customer/participant, to wonder if any of this could be real? Question my reality? OR do you want me to walk away saying, to myself, AHHH! I can see now how all this was just trickery and I imagine I could even figure it out! There is nothing wrong with haveing something occur inside the cabinet that stretches a bit beyond what is normally done in a spirit cabinet. Considering the art at its most basic, the options and origins of our work are simple, and somewhat limited- appear/dis-appear, transpose, etc. Making the impossible occur brings a hint of wonder. Usually a spirit cabinet is too big to have anyone wonder where "they" went, or might have been hiding. Generally the idea is one of possession, or a manifestation that uses the medium inside the box- who is of course, securely tied, so all the mischeif is done by the "visitor" from the other realm. If this is a spirit that is causing the actions in the cabinet, then perhaps an apport of something that was hers appears now inside the cabinet on the girl, say a hat form a hat box previously shown, and described as once belonging to the young lady- and, you know, she was v e r y fond of it. Sir or Madame, do you have a card? would you please use the pin and fasten it to the hat? let us see what Miss Emily thinks of others toying with her belongings shall we! Place the hat box on a table to the side of the stage, and take it from there. This is a variation on the man's coat tossed in and found later to be worn by the still tied medium. Having a Victorian girl appear is a push, as the question would be asked who is she? the girl of your tale? If she can manifest in that manner then why the cabinet? Why not just start as a mist and become solid? Once the seance takes this turn, it is ending with a TA-DAAAAAA! and might really scream "MAGIC TRICK", trick being the operative word. I would say the only way to know how it will play is to try it on a few test audiences, and insure they know they are test cases, and fill out a survey. The information will only be as good as the questions you ask, so you really need to know what you are trying to achieve with the effects. There are many many "really cool" things in magic (I have a lot of them in boxes in my spare room closet!) but, I have learned hard to ask myself "Why?" How does this become an item of Mystery? Where does it fit into MY scheme of what makes magic real in the world? Good luck Kay

Thanks for the in depth reply Kay.I did think an appearance was a bit much possibly ,but a dissapearance? Maybe less so.The assistant appears in the Victorian photgraph-previously shown and kept by spec-alongside the girl.Creepy and suitably impossible?

Girl on the photo appears in the Cabinet.
Girl from the Cabinet goes on the photo. Simple ? On the Surnateum site, you'll find two stories with apparitions and photographs, but I don't give the link; you should try to find by yourself. |

Try Angele Rosier, it's one of the stories with an effect on photography.

If you can switch out an assistnat or somebody, why not have the assistant in among the sitters (I am assuming there will be 6-8 people.) and, duringthe seance, switch HER out, so that a new person is in among the sitters. If yoj get 2 people who are close but definately not sisters, the effect should be pretty chilling and shaking to the few who would notice...especially if you deny anything like that happening.
Just a thought.

Years ago I did a seance effect without a cabinet, just a front curtain. Basically, medium was tied with Keller wrist tie, and ankles tied to legs of stool upon which I sat.
Each time the cutain was raised, the various usual things happened. The finale was that we ended up with an ANGRY spirit... There was a scream, then medium's head was seen over the top of the curtain, followed by the BOTTOM of the stool and feet. The illusion being that the spirit had lifted the medium up and spun him head over heals. Lastly, there was a ball of fire, the stool flew off to the left, while the medium rolled off to the right, clothing scortched and torn. We played it tongue in cheek, but it still made some folks uneasy. This whole thing could be done ANYWHERE...and was totally LOW tech, build for the cost of a stool and curtain.
Leaping Lizards!!! Who knew it was possible.
