I have a method for doing a prediction that I'm comfortable with (one of the object hanging in full view and audience can name anything sort of type of prediction), but now I'm trying to come up with some different themes to present this. Any ideas? I was debating something along the lines of having a "time machine" where you could go and get the prediction from the future, or something like that...

Perhaps you have an aged diary, passed on from an eccentric great uncle, who was also a performer, in a twilight zone kinda way his performances and yours are starting to meld together you and he are caught in time overlapping itself your life has taken on the quality of a double exposure in filmic terms, the genetic code is a time machine and tonight you are here to prove it!
I think to use a real time machine as you suggest would be seen as cheating, just my opinion. B

One of my favourite themes revolves around the enteric nervous system (or the second brain) the idea being that this primitive secondary intelligence in the body has a consciousness of its own, you can prove this by swallowing some gathered information, and later revealing it in the manner of your choosing.
Some tape recorded sounds of stomach grumbles can add a certain intimate ambience. Of course in this scenario you would have to make your prediction during the show. All the best, Corona Posted: Jan 25, 2006 12:50pm ------------------------------------------------ My contributions seem to carry the kiss of death to threads these days, my apologies if this has occured... Perhaps you could provide a little more detail as to your presentation. How about a theme revolving around remote viewing? Corona. I will post no more (unless requested). |

Predicting the future seems impossible...almost too impossible.
In my corporate shows, I present my predictions as "forecasts". Forecasts are more believable. I talk about weather forecasters, business trend forecasters, stock market forecasters, etc. I suggect that if a you study something long enought, you can learn to make accurate forecasts. I say, "Because I've study human behavior for 30 years, and I can make rather accurate forecast about what will happen while we are together." This works well for me in the corporate marketplace. Nice, forecast and remote viewing are excellent "catch phrases" for predictions.
Also, sometimes just letting the spectator choose whatever they want to believe is another way to go from my experiences.

Once again, Chuck great advice. Can we use your forecast terminology?

By all means, use the concept of "forecasts" for your prediction routine if it fits your performing style. It works for me in the corporate marketplace. But I realize it may not fit the performing style of all mentalists.
Anything I post on this site is for YOUR USE. Same for the ideas in my books. If I didn't want my perspectives used (and improved upon) by others, I wouldn't have posted them here or put them in my books. One of the essays in Mentalism, Incorporated: Volume Two is titled: Should Mentalists Present Prediction Routines? My posting here covers many of the key points in that essay. Dittos, thanks also CHuck. Lately I've tailored almost all my effects around the power of suggestion. Its nice to see alternative methods for different audiences.

Hmmm... I also think it depends if you are trying to give it a scientific-ish angle ->mentalism... but one can do all sorts of predictions using "bizarre magic" themes...

Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I seem to have hit a mental block lately creativity wise, and it's nice to get some brainstorming happening.
Thanks! |
