Ok I have been thinking about the mentalism I perform and ask myself a question, Why is it all so serious??
Does anyone here actually use mentalism as comedy/light hearted entertainment? Are there any good comedy effects out there. I think every person who performs mentalism knows that they are not mind readers just entertainers but does the audience realise this? would an audience prefer for some person come to there table and directly read there minds or make a card change in their hands. Which is more entertaining? what are the effects which have it all? what is, in everyones opinion the effect which 'has it all'????? ok discuss!!!!! |

I guess it depends on the type of performer and type of comedy. Bob Cassidy's performances are very funny. There are quite a few laughs in Marc Salem's show. Kardor's act is a hilarious spoof of mentalism.
Nelson had a series of books put out in the late 60's called Comedy Mentalism. And the late Terry Nosek put our a book on his comedy mental routines called "the Collected Works of Sigmund Fraud." |

I suppose I perform comedy mentalism, I am sometimes serious about it for dramatic effect. Tommy Cooper is one of my heroes, and to be honest I'm quite bored of all this body language nlp type stuff, I think it shows a lack of imagination in the performer.
For instance recently I performed a spoon bend (I made it obvious that I was actually exerting a lot of effort whilst talking about being 9 and watching uri geller, in actual fact, I don't bend the spoon at all, but vanish it instead. Perhaps what I do is not strictly mentalism, but dare I say it? magic, gulp. In the Uk we have Derren Brown, he does the serious psychological stuff, and respect to him, but I would like to see more varied approaches to mentalism. And I would like to see them get it wrong more. Corona. |

Archer and Jolly are the best comedy mentalists in the UK IMHO.

Peter - where can I see some of Archer and Jolly's stuff do you stock a DVD??
Corona - I like your point I think it is to easy to dare I say 'copy' certain performers. Derren brown has my respect for doing what he has done for mentalism but, to me watching him doesn not entertain me what so ever (i am sure I am going to get slated for saying that) the way I perform is, like my name I am a trixta, I open with some card effects and do the 'magic' thing then close with some mentalism feats, I like the kind of 'coin in hand' type of effects I treat it like a game of truth, I don't say 'hey my names ashley and I can read your mind' I say things like 'do you ever notice that sometimes you can JUST tell when some1s lying' and then go to a demonstration. I then end with a nice Deans box 'magical effect' I wonder how long it will be before a mentalist/magician will appear on the circit of 'Jongulers' I think it will be soon...... |

Look on the forum,
There are some threads about this topic on the froum. Please, do a search or just look in the Bill Hallahan's post on this thread http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=15 In my opinion comedy means rapport with the audience. Our mission is entertain. If you have to put a show of more than 30 min. you have to put humor in some moment. If you are good, the people will believe that you can do something unexplainable even if they have laugh a lot. The point in mentalism is to use the humor without loose credibility on your psi-character. You can do mentalism with humor (touching more deep in the audiences feelings) or mental magic (less rewarding in my opinion but more easy to carry) |

John Archer is absolutly amazing, I cant believe he's not famous! His new dvd has some amazing material on it, even if you aren't a comedy mentalist some of Archer's ideas are still amazing. And even if you don't use anything off them, you will just have such a great time watching them!
