Greetings all! I find myself needing a decent source for breakaway glass bottles (just like in the old cowboy movies) for a stage thing I am doing. I only need to break one per show. The only ones I have found were over $20.00 each. I was hoping to get by a little cheaper than that. Any suggestions would be appreciated, Thanks.

The price for the FX breakaway bottles and glass is what it is. That's one reason why movies cost so much to make...

Sir Real ... Theatre Effects has them. They are $108 for 6 bottles. I am a dealer for Theatre Effects and may be able to get them a little cheaper for you. Email me and tell me how many you would like.

Breakaway bottles and glass, eh? There are certainly two alternatives.
1. You purchase them ... it can be less time consuming, but they can be costly (with some exceptions ... $108 from Theatre Effects is already a pretty good deal). 2. You make them yourself. It can take some time and effort, but it can also be fun. There are two books I would like to suggest to you: "The Prop Builder's Molding and Casting Handbook" by Thurston James, and "Secrets of Hollywood Special Effects" by Robert E. McCarthy. Both have instructions on how to cook up sugar glass bottles or thin, resin breakaway bottles. Making your own bottles is always handy when you happen to have a special or unique bottle that you wish to base your breakaways on. However, I might be looking into an order with Theatre Effects, myself. |

w3irDO,
It all depends on the routine that the original poster had in mind. Perhaps his routine was a comedy bit that involves his assistant whacking him over the head with a bottle. If the script calls for that, then obviously a break-away bottle would be prefered over a real one! Jes |

You know that girl IllusionMaster has a point! I'd rather be hit over the head with a sugar bottle than a real bottle, although if you have hardy assistants sure ya could run it by them with the real bottle idea (that is a joke, obviously!).

For all you home chefs there is a new item at:
http://www.smooth-on.com/specialfx.htm It's called "Smash" and its a 2 part urethane mix. Sugar glass will draw ants and it will warp and go gooey if you don't use it right away. Cheers!

Breakaway stuff is better kept for film etc., because it does not sound like glass breaking like it would live. It needs serious Foley.
Besides, when was the last time you saw someone whacked over the head with a dupe? They hurt as much as the real thing. |
