Maybe the answers will need to go to Inner Thoughts or the like...
But I was wondering - if you had to "materialize" a Hound of Tindalos - which we can have as a 4th dimensional mosntrous entitiy - so it doesn't have to look doggy... in a non-dark environment - but cabaret / small venue.... how would you do it? I.e. I've been using some sound effects for weird growls/howls that are altered to sound otherworldy - can use spoor like green slime... claw marks etc... But sometimes I want to actually have the Hound put in a brief appearance during a show - (the show revolves around time-travel effects and mentalism - and accidently brings a Hound in to finish the whole thing ..performer included)... I wonder thought that having a hound appear might ruin the mystery - but sometimes I wonder if it would be great to have some people elap up as they notice some "thing" brush / fly by them and onto the performer (who ends up with a shredded shirt!) and vanishes.... Or some such thing... Hey - anyone want to sell me their Lovecraftian Ceremonies!!?!?1?....!!!! (****, how the heck does one get that book)...

Smells - no problem (baggy effect under table etc(
Cold Air - well no..but got drafts Yep.. I could rig the area up for poltergeist like things...in a path so that one can imagine the beast coming... maybe some swirling mist appears near the end and I can project (or stooge that is) an image of eyes or something on the mist as it envelops the performer...

In "The Compleat Invocation", there is a story called "The Great God, Pan". In it, the effect shows cloven hoof tracks through a box of dirt, after the lights were turned on. The same effect with paw prints could be used.
Just a thought. |

Thanks Seance! That is a cool idea..... I just have to figure out how to do it in dim light - I am trying to avoid dark seance settings....
reminds me a bit of "Night of the Demon" film with the paws of the invisible demon clomping into the earth.... Hmm.. timed reactions or light effects seem to spring to mind....

In the Book of Shadows Randy Clower offers "the Secrets of the Attic Crate," in which a "thing" is materialized in an archeological packing crate. The crate rocks violently and its slats are strained when the "thing" pounds from the inside, and mere glimpses of a horrible creature can be seen through broken holes in the crate; some kind of grotesque appendage shoots out from one of the crate's holes toward a spectator, but quickly retracts. Clower points out that the audience should only catch glimpses of the "thing," and what they think they see is much more effective than what they actually see.

Hmm... yeah... could be I adapt it to a sarcophagus...and then it busts open..lights go off.... mini dark seance effects for 30 secs - 1 minute... "torn up" performer when lights come on ...!!!
Time to go searching for the book of Shadows.... (hope it isn't as difficult as finding Lovecraftian Ceremonies)....(feels like these books are as rare as the real Necronomicon (real )

Get a big friendly dog. Shag it up with some fake fur and fangs. Place a drop of cinnamon oil on it's tongue. It will shake violently and foam as though going mad. Show it off, of course, in the dimmest of light. Lots of stage magic ways to make it appear and dissapear...if you're doing it in your own house you can rig up all kinds of stuff. Have a big bowl of water and some treats handy.

Hmm... my fearsome standard poodle ...
Actually, the cinammon things sounds a bit cruel to the fella... the performer might actually be ripped to shreds in objective reality.... can't do that to my Scooby.

Regarding the use of a dog with cinnamon oil, PETA and ASPCA will smack you down, and rightly so. To use the discomfort of animals for entertainment is not kosher these days....
Try something else. |

Yep - we must only be cruel to our spectators (joke).... hee hee
The only thing I use my dog for is a "mental fetch" trick witha modified Xpert "X-card" routine - where the chosen card ends up with a paw print on its back after the deck is touched by the paw of my dog

This may not be at all useful for the venue you're using (unless they'll let you paint the place), but check out this link...
http://www.2loop.com/3drooms.html It shows rooms painted so that from a particular angle, an image appears. I'm not saying that this is a perfect way to "manifest" a Hound of Tindalos, but it might get some gears grinding in folks' heads. -- Jake

Thanks Jake!
Hmm... maybe if I get a large tryptich it could work - the nice thing about this concept is it fits with the Tindalosian "angles" thing... in fact... this could be the basis of an entire other effect regarding space/time travel using angles and some cool rotating art boards...!!!! The Hounds thank you - they say they will eat your soul last

I suppose that's the best I could hope for, considering. That reminds me that I need to learn how to pronounce "Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fthagn!" before it's Far Too Late. If you can't beat 'em...
Also, while pondering this effect further, it occurred to me that painting the rest of the walls/floor/ceiling in question might be useful, especially with weird shapes and colors. This should create some "visual static" to help keep spectators from figuring out what's going to happen before the time is right. -- Jake

It also reminds me of the film "Deep Red Hatchet Murders" by Dario Argento - not to give the plot away but there is a key scene where someone is hiding in plain sight in a room by basically blending it with the crazy art all over the walls...
Kind of makes one wonder about having tentacles sprout from places...or demon arms

If you do this, please post a link to a picture or two. The more I think about this, the cooler it sounds.
